Nevada Opens Investigation Into Hundreds of Reports of Double-Voting During 2024 Election

Nevada is intensifying its scrutiny of election integrity following the 2024 election cycle, primarily examining cases of potential double-voting. As these investigations unfold, questions are being raised about transparency and the effectiveness of the process.

The Federalist reported that Nevada initiated 182 investigations into double-voting, with only two resolved, highlighting concerns over unresolved reports and the pace of case closures.

Election integrity is a significant concern for Nevada, particularly in light of reports suggesting widespread irregularities during the 2024 elections.

The state's focus is squarely on double-voting incidents, with as many as 180 cases under active investigation.

Despite the initiation of these probes, many cases remain unresolved, signaling potential challenges in mitigating future violations.

Steps to Investigate Double-Voting Incidents

Voting twice is considered a felony in Nevada, a serious charge requiring proof of intent before prosecutions can advance. So far, 762 Election Integrity Violation Reports have been filed, reflecting both the primary and general elections. Of these, a majority of 515 cases have been closed without finding any violations.

Only a small fraction of these cases, eleven in total, have been referred for potential prosecution. These referrals stem from both the February presidential preference primary and the June general election primary, elucidating how few cases escalate through the legal system despite many reports.

Nevada's Secretary of State, Francisco Aguilar, has asserted that the 2024 election cycle was the most secure in history.

This claim is supported by the implementation of a new Voter Registration and Election Management System (VREMS), which centralizes voter data to aid in identifying discrepancies such as double-voting.

Despite these advances, the report does not delve deeply into issues of cross-state voting, indicating these matters fall under the purview of the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) to manage voter rolls effectively.

Chuck Muth, leader of the Citizen Outreach Foundation, has openly criticized Nevada's voter roll management, filing lawsuits attempting to compel updates to keep them current. These efforts highlight the ongoing tension between citizen watchdog groups and state officials.

“The Secretary of State’s report is only scratching the surface,” Muth claimed, voicing that voter rolls remain problematic due to outdated information. He argues that attempts by organizations like the Pigpen Project to sanitize these rolls have been hindered.

Adding to the criticism, Muth emphasized the report's lack of clarity, stating Nevadans deserved full transparency on each violation report. "It’s not enough to simply say the reports were ‘closed,’" he remarked, stressing the need for detailed disclosures to prevent future electoral offenses.

Concern Over Transparency in Violation Handling

While the Secretary of State focuses on advancing security measures, the system's insufficiencies in handling the existing volume of election violation reports are evident.

The substantial number of unresolved cases fuels doubts about whether the investigations are subjected to diligent and thorough processes.

According to Muth, the current gap between open cases and the few successfully closed is disheartening.

In his words, it gives the impression that the report might prioritize public relations over tackling genuine procedural issues at hand.

Ultimately, the question remains whether the investigative process is flawed or if efforts by the Secretary of State's office to take these violations seriously are lacking. Muth highlights the need for an honest evaluation of the efficiencies of the existing mechanisms.
