'Mulan' Singer CoCo Lee Dead at 48

CoCo Lee, known as the musical voice of Disney's "Mulan" animated film, died at the age of 48.

Lee passed away days after a suicide attempt on July 2 that left her in a coma until her passing on Wednesday.

Her family's statement

“CoCo had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months,” her family posted to Facebook. “Although, CoCo sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her. On 2 July, she committed suicide at home and was sent to the hospital. Despite the best efforts of the hospital team to rescue and treat her from her coma, she finally passed away on 5 July, 2023.

"As a family of CoCo, we are very grateful and honored to have such an excellent and outstanding sister. We are thankful to God for giving us such a kind angel. We know now she has gone to a happier place and no longer suffers from depression; we trust God has her best interest looked after!" it added.

Her impact

Singer-songwriter Wang Leehom paid tribute to Lee in an Instagram post, describing her as the "biggest star," according to Sky News.

"In the music industry, Coco Lee broke down international barriers, before any other Chinese singer did," he wrote.

"Let's always remember her, as a brave pioneer, and an important musical legend."

Her career

"Lee's career spanned around 30 years. Among her most notable performances were voicing of the female warrior Mulan in the Mandarin-language version of Disney's 'Mulan' and performing the Oscar-nominated song 'A Love Before Time' from the film 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,'" Reuters reported.

"She was born in Hong Kong in 1975 and was the youngest of three children of a Hong Kong Cantonese mother and Malaysian father," it continued.

Her career includes 18 albums and appearances in three films. She leaves behind a husband, her sisters and two stepdaughters.

Lee's death also puts a spotlight on the importance of getting help for those struggling with thoughts of self-harm.
