Mitt Romney comes to defense of Sen. Katie Britt after widely panned SOTU rebuttal

In a move that has since sparked a firestorm of criticism, Republicans tapped Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) to deliver the official rebuttal to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address, but it appears that she did impress at least one prominent lawmaker who believes she could even have vice-presidential chops, as Breitbart reports.

Britt's fan and defender is none other than Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney, who blasted what he called the “media overreaction” to the young legislator's Thursday night presentation.

Over the weekend, Romney took to X, formerly Twitter, to offer his take on last week's speeches, commenting both on Biden's as well as Britt's.

“In a good way, the delivery was over-the-top, out of character – Biden's, of course,” Romney began.

He continued, “Katie Britt's too. The media overreaction to hers not his tells us who liberals most fear as VP nominee.”

Considering Romney's longstanding feud with current GOP front-runner Donald Trump, any implied endorsement of Britt as a candidate to take the number-two spot atop the ticket this November would likely fall on deaf ears, even without the avalanche of criticism the young senator received in the wake of her SOTU response.

Unfortunately for Britt, her rebuttal to Biden was slammed from all angles, with Saturday Night Live taking aim at her presentation by way of a sketch starring actress Scarlett Johansson, as Variety noted.

Mimicking the breathy, halting, and somewhat dramatic speech pattern Britt employed during her Thursday remarks, Johansson – as the senator – declared herself “a wife, a mother and the craziest bi**h in the Target parking lot.”

It was not only those on the left who took issue with Britt's performance, with Hannah Bleau Knudsen of Breitbart News opining that even though the lawmaker “appeared to address the right topics on paper, her speaking style and overall delivery completely failed to resonate, prompting critiques across the board....”

Trump supporter and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was similarly disappointed with Thursday's rebuttal and made his position known in a post on X.

“I'm sure Katie Britt is a sweet mom and person, but this speech is not what we need,” Kirk began.

He added, “Joe Biden just declared war on the American right and Katie Britt is talking like she's hosting a cooking show whispering about how Democrats 'don't get it.'”

Not everyone piled on, however, with Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) asserting that Britt had not been provided with fact-checking assistance for her remarks and suggesting that she had been thrown “to the wolves” as a young, inexperienced legislator whose colleagues asked her to rebut the president “knowing she had not yet given even a Senate speech, as The Hill reported.

Though Romney's seemingly off-the-cuff placement of Britt's name and the topic of the vice presidency in the same sentence may have set some tongues wagging amid ongoing speculation about Trump's pick, it seems safe to say that after last week, the freshman from Alabama is unlikely to appear on any such shortlist during this election cycle.
