Minneapolis school shooting suspect identified

A horrific tragedy struck Minneapolis when a gunman unleashed chaos at a Catholic school, leaving two children dead.

On August 27, 2025, 23-year-old Robin Westman opened fire at Annunciation Catholic Church and School during morning Mass, killing two children, aged 8 and 10, and injuring 17 others, including 14 children. The shooter, who later took their own life, used three legally purchased firearms: a rifle, a pistol, and a shotgun. The FBI is probing the attack as a hate crime and an act of domestic terrorism.

The shooting unfolded at 8 a.m., shattering the peace of morning Mass at the south Minneapolis parish. Westman, dressed in black and wielding a black rifle, targeted the church and its attached school. The community, tight-knit and devout, was left reeling.

Shooter’s Ties to Parish

Westman had deep connections to Annunciation, having attended its school through eighth grade. Their mother, Mary Grace Westman, served as parish secretary until her 2021 retirement. This familial link makes the targeting of the parish particularly chilling.

Court records reveal Westman, born Robert Paul Westman, legally changed their name to Robin in 2019. Mary Grace noted on a court form that her child identified as female. This detail, while personal, fuels questions about the shooter’s motives, which remain unclear.

“Minor child identifies as female,” Mary Grace wrote, signaling Westman’s gender transition. Yet, this alone explains nothing about the rampage. The rush to pin motives on identity risks oversimplifying a complex tragedy.

Manifesto and Disturbing Videos

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described a manifesto timed for release on YouTube, calling it “disturbing writing.” The document, paired with deleted YouTube videos showing weapons and handwritten notes, suggests premeditation. Westman’s online footprint vanished quickly, leaving investigators scrambling.

“It appeared to show him at the scene,” O’Hara told NBC, hinting at Westman’s calculated planning. Such manifestos often glorify violence, a hallmark of what O’Hara called a “classic pathway to an active shooter.” The public deserves clarity, not speculation, on what drove this horror.

Police executed four search warrants, one at the crime scene and three at metro-area residences, seizing writings and evidence. The scope of the investigation underscores the attack’s gravity. Westman’s suicide ensures no courtroom answers, frustrating those seeking justice.

Victims and Community Impact

Ten victims landed at Hennepin Healthcare, with one adult and six children initially critical; six others were treated at Children’s Minnesota Hospital. All are expected to survive, a small mercy in an otherwise grim toll. The injured, mostly children, face long recoveries.

“Our thoughts are with all the victims,” Children’s Minnesota Hospital stated, echoing the community’s grief. The sentiment is heartfelt, but words alone can’t heal the scars left on families. Minneapolis now grapples with yet another senseless act of violence.

Westman’s uncle, Bob Heleringer, a former Kentucky lawmaker, expressed raw anguish. “He was my nephew, and I wish he had shot me instead,” he told The Associated Press. His pain reflects a family blindsided by Westman’s actions.

Investigation and Motive Questions

“It’s an unspeakable tragedy,” Heleringer added, praying for his sister and the victims. His former role as a lawmaker contrasts starkly with his nephew’s descent into extremism. The personal toll on families, both victims’ and the shooter’s, is immeasurable.

The FBI, under Director Kash Patel, labeled the shooting a hate crime targeting Catholics. “The FBI is investigating this as an act of domestic terrorism,” Patel posted on X. The hate crime angle, while plausible, demands concrete evidence before conclusions are drawn.

“We have seen a whole lot of hate,” O’Hara noted, yet no specific motive ties Westman to the church attack. The absence of a clear “why” frustrates a nation weary of ideologically driven violence. Progressive narratives around identity or guns won’t solve this puzzle alone.
