Jonathan Brostoff represented District 3 on Milwaukee’s east side, having been elected to the Milwaukee Common Council in November 2022. His commitment to his constituents was evident through his work and personal interactions within the community.

Brostoff was found at Greenfield Park, and the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting a thorough investigation into his death. The investigation points towards suicide, with an autopsy scheduled for November 5 to confirm the cause of death.

Prior to his role as an alderman, Brostoff served as Wisconsin’s 19th State Assembly District Representative. His career in public office was marked by an unyielding enthusiasm for advocating on behalf of his community and various social causes.

Throughout his time in office, Brostoff was deeply involved in local and state-wide initiatives that sought to improve the lives of his constituents. He volunteered at Pathfinders, a youth shelter, and was an active participant at the Maryland Avenue Montessori School.

His involvement extended to supporting veterans through Dryhootch, a nonprofit organization focused on veterans’ welfare. Brostoff also remained an active alumnus of Milwaukee’s Public Allies program, demonstrating his commitment to fostering new community leaders.

Moreover, Brostoff was open about his personal challenges, including his struggle with bipolar disorder, which he shared in hopes of destigmatizing mental health issues.

Brostoff’s death has elicited reactions from various public figures and community members who remembered him fondly. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson expressed his deep sorrow, highlighting Brostoff’s unique energy and passion for his work.

The Milwaukee Common Council released a statement emphasizing their honor to have served with him and expressing their condolences, requesting privacy for his family during this difficult time.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers remarked on the tragedy of Brostoff’s untimely passing, noting the positive impact he had on many lives through his dedicated service and advocacy.

Community Mourns a Champion of Public Service

Condolences and tributes have poured in from across the state. Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley shared his devastation, recalling Brostoff as a beloved leader and partner in public service.

Statements from local organizations such as the Milwaukee Jewish Federation and Forward Latino reflect Brostoff’s wide-reaching influence and commitment to service and advocacy within diverse communities.

Paul Schmitz, a local impact contributor, and Marc Tasman, a neighbor, both highlighted Brostoff’s selfless nature and deep commitment to improving Milwaukee.

Jonathan Brostoff is survived by his wife and four children, who along with his many friends and colleagues, mourn the loss of a passionate advocate and dedicated family man.

As the community remembers Brostoff, they reflect on a man who dedicated his life to public service, seeking to make his city a better place for all its residents. His legacy of service and advocacy continues to inspire those who knew him and worked alongside him.

The city of Milwaukee will hold a memorial service to honor Brostoff’s life and contributions, the details of which will be announced in the coming days.
