Michael Cole, Star Of 'The Mod Squad', Passes At 84

Michael Cole, iconic for his role in "The Mod Squad," has died at 84. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Cole passed away at Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center on Tuesday.

Born on July 3, 1940, in Madison, Wisconsin, Michael Cole's early life was marked by challenges. He started drinking at about 12 years old and experienced a tumultuous youth. Dropping out of high school, Cole married young and had two children by the time he was 20.

Seeking a fresh start, Cole moved to Los Angeles from Wisconsin. In LA, he worked various jobs while trying to make a mark in acting.

His potential was recognized after he performed a scene from the play "Picnic," which led to opportunities in television and film.

Despite initial hesitations about its premise, Cole joined "The Mod Squad" in 1968. He was cast as Pete Cochran, a role that would make him a household name. The show, produced by Aaron Spelling and Danny Thomas, featured young offenders turned undercover cops and tackled significant social issues.

The Rise Of 'The Mod Squad'

"The Mod Squad" became a symbol of the 1960s counterculture, addressing themes like racism, drug addiction, and anti-war activism through its narrative.

The series was notable for its non-violent approach to law enforcement, reflecting the ethos of the era.

The show ran for five seasons, including 123 episodes, and became a cultural icon. Rebeka Knott from the Groovy History website commented, "Being true to the spirit of the counterculture generation, they did not use weapons in the course of their jobs. They were able to effectively bring criminals to justice with little or no violence. That is what the hippie culture was about … being peaceful."

During the show's run, Cole survived a severe car accident which left him needing 130 stitches to his face.

Despite this setback, he continued to perform on the series, showcasing his dedication to his role and resilience as an actor.

After "The Mod Squad," Cole's career included a variety of roles in television and film. He starred in a 1999 MGM feature based on "The Mod Squad" alongside Giovanni Ribisi, Omar Epps, and Claire Danes, bringing the iconic series to a new generation.

Personal Life And Legacy

Michael Cole's personal life saw him achieving sobriety with the support of his third wife, Shelley Funes, whom he married in 1996.

She helped him through rehabilitation at the Betty Ford Center, a pivotal moment in his life.

Throughout his career, Cole had moments of self-doubt about the series that made him famous. He once remarked, "[The show] sounds stupid and I hope it never gets on the air," yet later acknowledged the importance of the role in shaping his career and impacting audiences.

Cole's death marks the end of an era for fans of "The Mod Squad" and those who admired his extensive career in Hollywood.

While no cause of death was revealed, as noted by his publicist Rachel Harris, his legacy as a part of a transformative period in American television remains significant.

Survived by his wife, Shelley Funes, Cole leaves behind a legacy of groundbreaking television and personal triumphs over adversity. His story from troubled youth to celebrated actor is a testament to the transformative power of resilience and redemption.
