The last few weeks in Texas have been very “not typical” in terms of the weather we are seeing.
Generally speaking, our rainy season winds down in May, and I simply cannot remember any time in recent years when we were still seeing this type of rainfall this deep into the summer.
It has cost us dearly, with massive flooding throughout the state, and obviously the tragedy that happened in the area of the Guadalupe River, where Donald and Melania Trump just toured. The First Lady was clearly impacted by what she saw, making a rare public statement on the matter.
So far, the death toll is at 129, but there are still dozens, if not hundreds, missing from the areas impacted most by the flooding.
The most horrific story from these floods has been the dozens of children who died at a local Christian camp for girls, which was located right off the banks of the river.
Donald Trump visited the area on Friday, and he was visibly shaken by what he saw.
The president stated, "I've never seen anything like this, and I've seen a lot of bad ones. It’s hard to believe the devastation."
Donald Trump opened the floor to questions while visiting the flood sites to assess the damage.
When a reporter questioned Trump about the response, he did not take too kindly to the implication of the journalist that the administration fell short on its response.
Trump stated, "Only an evil person would ask a question like that.”
He added, "I think this has been heroism. This has been incredible. Really, the job you've all done. It's easy to sit back and say, 'Oh, what could have happened here or there, maybe we could have done something differently.' This was a thing ... that's never happened before."
Melania accompanied the president on this trip, as she has done in the past when Trump has visited disaster sites.
She stated, “My deepest sympathy to all of the parents who lost beautiful young souls. We are grieving with you.”
She continued, 'I met beautiful young ladies. They gave me this special bracelet from the camp in honor of all of the little girls that lost their lives. So we are here to honor them and also to give the support,' she said, holding up her arm with a silver charm bracelet on it.” She then promised, “I will be back. I promise to them. And I just pray for them and giving them my strength and love.”
I have always loved seeing Melania on these trips with Trump, and I believe it adds another level of humanity to the visit. Not to mention, Melania needs some positive press, as Democrats have once again been coming after her for Trump’s push against illegal immigration. Now we can just sit back and wait for the media to find something wrong and attack her again, just as they did during Trump’s first term.
