Mass shooting at Lincoln University homecoming leaves 1 dead

Tragedy struck a historic campus when gunfire shattered the joy of a homecoming celebration at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

On a night meant for nostalgia and pride, a violent outburst near the football stadium during a tailgate event claimed one life and wounded six others.

This devastating incident unfolded on a Saturday evening around 9:30 p.m., as alumni and students gathered in Chester County, about 50 miles west of Philadelphia, to revel in the annual homecoming festivities.

Gunfire Disrupts Historic Homecoming Celebration

The day had been filled with the excitement of the Lincoln Lions facing off against the Elizabeth City State Vikings, with the university sharing videos of the vibrant celebrations.

But as the tailgate and yardfest event unfolded near the stadium, chaos erupted with shots ringing out, sending attendees fleeing in every direction.

Several others were hurt in the stampede to escape, though exact numbers remain unclear as authorities piece together the night’s grim toll.

Investigation Points to Multiple Gunmen

Police quickly responded, detaining an individual found with a firearm, though no charges have been announced as the investigation continues into the early hours of the following morning.

Officials have uncovered what they call “viable evidence” suggesting multiple gunmen were involved in the parking lot area between the stadium and the International Cultural Center, where campus police are based.

District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe noted, “We’re operating as if this is not an incident where someone came in with the design to inflict mass damage on a college campus.”

Campus Lockdown and Community Response

While that may offer some cold comfort, it hardly erases the horror of a night meant for unity turned deadly—another reminder of how quickly safety can vanish in today’s volatile climate.

The campus was briefly locked down in the aftermath, but authorities lifted the restriction after confirming no ongoing threat lingered over the historic institution, the nation’s first degree-granting HBCU, founded in 1854.

Lincoln University, with a legacy of producing luminaries like Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and Baseball Hall of Famer Monte Irvin, now faces the somber task of healing from this wound.

Support Offered Amidst Grief and Shock

Chief of Police Marc Partee captured the heartbreak, stating, “This was to be a joyous occasion, homecoming, when individuals come back and they give back to their alma mater, and they live the good memories of their times at Lincoln University which has propelled them into life.”

He added, “This was interrupted by gunfire that should not have occurred.” And isn’t that the crux of it—why must such senseless acts keep tearing through moments of community and pride?

As the university community grapples with this shock, counseling services will be available for students and staff starting at 10 a.m. the following day, a small but vital step toward processing a night that should never have happened, announced via the school’s social media.
