Man who avoided prison thanks to leftist DA George Gascón arrested for fatally stabbing a woman

Stefen Sutherland, who avoided prison time thanks to Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, has been arrested for fatally stabbing a woman, Breitbart reported.  The George Soros-funded district attorney recommended mental health services rather than prison for Sutherland.

The 31-year-old suspect had been charged with assault with a deadly weapon in 2020. Sutherland slit the throat of a construction worker who was being too noisy for his liking, but the worker survived.

A probation officer for Los Angeles warned that Sutherland could commit more violence and recommended prison for him. However, Gascón, who had already been lenient on Sutherland by not pursuing attempted murder, opted for mental health diversion instead.

Then on May 23, the violent criminal allegedly struck again, this time fatally shooting his upstairs neighbor Jennifer Gomez 19 times. Sutherland and Gomez had disagreements in the past about noise complaints though it's unclear what his alleged motive was.

Despite the latest development with Sutherland, Gascón defended his decision to go easy on the suspect after the stabbing. "The court approved the treatment plan and deemed the defendant safe for community treatment," a statement from the district attorney's office explained, according to Fox News.

"The defendant participated for nearly two years in [the] treatment program without issue. We are saddened by the most recent allegations, and our hearts go out to the victim and those who loved them," Gascón's statement added.

However successful the district attorney believes he was, colleagues were eager to point out that Gascón's failures directly led to Sutherland's repeat offense. "One of the things Gascón does is manipulate things with the charging," Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney John Lewin, who recently prosecuted millionaire murderer Robert Durst, said.

"You make it a discount with assault with a deadly weapon, and you give him mental health diversion. It doesn’t look as bad as attempted murder," Lewin explained.

Los Angeles County Association of Deputy District Attorneys Vice President Eric Siddall more broadly blamed a systemic problem in the approach to crime. "By all estimation, this person actually did have a serious mental health condition, but you just can't put someone who stabbed someone back on the street," Siddall said.

"That's not a solution. It's irresponsible," he added.

"You can't really blame it all on Gascon," Siddall continued. "The state government created a law that basically makes it impossible to stop someone from getting diversion, the state and county have failed to invest in any kind of facility for the mentally ill, and prosecutors like Gascon … all three of those create a disaster where people get killed."

This crime comes on the heels of another alleged murder perpetrated by a person who shouldn't have been on the streets. Jade Simone Brookfield, 23, is being charged with murder after stabbing 40-year Dennis Banner to death.

Brookfield also had been in the diversion plan like Sutherland despite violent offences. He rap sheet included a 2020 stabbing of another woman as well as several several prior charges of assault.

These radical district attorneys are not interested in prosecuting crime but rather in putting dangerous criminals back on the street. It's unclear whether they are incompetent, naive, or somehow fulfilling the wishes of their leftist donors like Soros.
