Man crashes into president's motorcade after campaign dinner in Delaware

A dramatic scene unfolded Sunday evening in Wilmington, Delaware near the downtown-based Biden-Harris 2024 campaign headquarters.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden had just finished a meal with members of the reelection campaign when a vehicle was involved in an accident with Biden's motorcade.

The Washington Informer noted:

As President Biden responded to a reporter’s question, a silver sedan with Delaware license plates collided with a motorcade SUV at an intersection near the campaign headquarters. Television footage captured the moment when Secret Service agents swiftly escorted the president to his vehicle after the impact.

The scene escalated when Secret Service agents and security personnel drew their weapons on an individual who was allegedly responsible for the crash.

Shortly after the crash occurred, Biden was taken promptly to his waiting vehicle, with the first lady already inside of it. They were rapidly driven away from the site of the accident.

The man reportedly raised his hands in compliance before being escorted away.

The suspect involved in the crash, who was driving a silver sedan, was identified as James Cooper, 46.

"There was no protective interest associated with this event and the President’s motorcade departed without incident," a Secret Service spokesperson said.

An initial White House report regarding the incident stated: "There was a loud bang'"…'and POTUS was standing outside the vehicle with a surprised expression on his face.'"

The New York Post reported later in the week that he has been charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

The driver who plowed into President Biden’s motorcade as he left his campaign headquarters in Delaware Sunday night was charged with driving while under the influence, authorities announced Monday.

Cooper was also charged with inattentive driving in addition to the DUI.

It was also noted that Cooper was likely unaware that he had smashed into the president's motorcade, according to authorities.

It wasn't the first time Biden's motorcade was involved in a traffic accident, according to the Post.

In 2020, the then-president-elect’s motorcade collided with a vehicle on the road, leaving a state trooper and a 77-year-old woman with minor injuries.

Cooper was reportedly already released from custody and is awaiting a court date.
