Zohran Mamdani faces fierce criticism over flip-flopping Israel stance

New York City’s first general election mayoral debate just turned into a political cage match over one candidate’s controversial views.

On Thursday, Democrat nominee Zohran Mamdani found himself under fire from Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and independent candidate former Gov. Andrew Cuomo during a heated debate hosted by NBC 4 New York/WNBC and Telemundo 47/WNJU in partnership with POLITICO.

Fox News reported that the clash centered on Mamdani’s past statements and his approach to supporting Jewish New Yorkers in a city that stands as the largest Jewish diaspora outside Israel.

As the debate unfolded at 30 Rock, Mamdani faced tough scrutiny over how he’d represent all New Yorkers if elected as the city’s first Muslim mayor.

POLITICO Senior Politics Editor Sally Goldenberg pressed him on whether Jewish communities could trust him to be a unifying leader, pointing to his earlier refusal to reject a phrase widely seen as inciting violence against Jews.

She also brought up his 2017 rap lyrics that seemed to endorse individuals convicted of supporting terrorism, putting Mamdani squarely on the defensive.

Opponents Pile on With Sharp Critiques

Sliwa didn’t hold back, painting Mamdani as out of touch with the fears of Jewish New Yorkers facing rising antisemitism. “Jews don't trust that you are going to be there for them when they are victims of anti-Semitic attacks,” Sliwa declared.

Well, that’s a gut punch—hard to argue when trust is the currency of leadership, and Mamdani’s track record seems to leave some voters skeptical.

Cuomo jumped in with equal force, demanding a clear stance on Israel and accusing Mamdani of dodging the issue.

“Answer the question, you won't support Israel,” Cuomo snapped. That’s a direct challenge, and in a city with deep ties to Israel, sidestepping this question could cost votes faster than a subway delay.

Mamdani tried to counter, insisting he acknowledges Israel’s right to exist, but with a caveat that raised eyebrows.

“I would not recognize any state's right to exist with a system of hierarchy based on race or religion,” he said. Noble in theory, perhaps, but critics might see this as a diplomatic dodge rather than a firm commitment.

On the phrase “globalize the intifada,” Mamdani claimed his perspective has shifted after discussions with Jewish New Yorkers, and he now discourages its use.

Yet, his history as a co-founder of a college group advocating for Palestinian causes and his strong rhetoric against Israel’s actions in Gaza since the 2023 Hamas attacks keep the controversy alive.

For many conservative voters, this feels like too little, too late—can a mayor truly bridge divides when past words still echo with division?

Supporters Rally as Election Nears

Outside 30 Rock, Mamdani’s supporters gathered on debate night, showing there’s a base ready to back him as the race to replace Mayor Eric Adams, who recently suspended his re-election bid, heats up.

With Election Day set for November 4, 2025, the stakes couldn’t be higher in a city grappling with complex social tensions and a need for leadership that unites rather than polarizes.

While Mamdani’s opponents argue he’s a divisive figure, the question remains whether his evolving stances can win over a skeptical electorate—or if Sliwa and Cuomo’s pointed critiques will sway voters looking for a steadier hand in these turbulent times.
