Libertarian Party leaders not sure about RFK Jr.'s VP pick

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced his running mate for the 2024 presidential election last week and stirred up plenty of headlines, and head scratches.

Some of those head scratches came from the Libertarian National Committee, according to The Hill.

At issue among libertarians is that his vice presidential pick, tech attorney and entrepreneur Nicole Shanahan, doesn't exactly align with the party's views.

Shanahan, who has little in the way of name recognition, is also a Democrat, though she announced this week that she will formally leave the party as a result of being picked.

Libertarians react

Libertarian National Committee Chair Angela McArdle explained to The Hill why she doesn't think Shanahan was the best choice for RFK Jr., who is running as an independent with some libertarian views.

"I think that a lot of libertarians are a little bit confused over why he chose Nicole Shanahan. I’m sure she’s a lovely person, but she doesn’t necessarily fit into alignment with any of our views," McArdle said.

Shanahan had also supported President Joe Biden and Transporation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, which left McArdle with more questions.

"So I’m really unsure how she’s going to fit in with the Libertarian Party. You know, I’m anxious to hear about it," McArdle said.

There have been rumors and growing speculation that RFK Jr. will eventually join the Libertarian Party and run on its ticket for the 2024 election.

Joining the party?

McArdle shared her thoughts on whether or not RFK would make a good fit as a nominee on the Libertarian Party ticket.

"I think that he’s going to have to really show us, and she certainly will as well, that they care about individual and economic freedom in particular, and that they want to continue to be, you know, they want to be our standard-bearers," she said.

She added, "And I certainly understand, you know, that they’re not going to come into alignment with us on every single issue."

Only time will tell if RFK Jr. makes the switch and runs as a libertarian candidate. Whether he goes that route or stays where he is, he's still a massive problem for President Biden's 2024 campaign, according to most polls.
