Laser attack on CBP helicopters results in four illegal immigrant arrests in Oregon

Imagine flying a helicopter over Portland, only to be blinded by a rogue laser beam aimed straight at your cockpit. That’s the dangerous reality two U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) pilots faced over the weekend, leading to a swift federal response and the arrest of four individuals in a startling incident.

Breitbart reported that federal law enforcement tracked down the source of the laser strike on two CBP helicopters, culminating in the arrest of four unauthorized migrants at a residence in Portland.

The investigation kicked off when sharp-eyed CBP pilots captured images pinpointing the exact location of the laser attack. It’s a stark reminder of how technology can turn the tables on those who think they can endanger lives from the shadows.

Joint Operation Targets Laser Strike Suspects

A coordinated effort by DHS Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Office in Portland executed a search of the identified house. The operation didn’t just net the suspected laser wielder but also three others found to be in the country without legal status.

Among the arrested, one individual is believed to be directly responsible for the laser attack, a federal crime that could land someone behind bars for up to five years with fines reaching $250,000. It’s a hefty price for a reckless act that could blind pilots mid-flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration warns that laser pointers aren’t toys—they can distract or even temporarily blind pilots, putting everyone from crew to passengers to folks on the ground at serious risk. One has to wonder if the thrill of a prank is worth endangering countless lives.

The Department of Homeland Security released the identities of the four arrested individuals in a statement on Tuesday. Their backgrounds paint a complex picture of repeated legal entanglements and unauthorized presence in the U.S.

First is Diogenes Albores-Suchiapa, a Mexican national with a record including methamphetamine possession and trespassing charges in Gresham, Oregon, plus multiple CBP arrests for immigration violations. Then there’s Andres Brian Lopez-Labra, also from Mexico, with prior unlawful entry and a recent DUI charge by the Oregon State Police.

Rounding out the group are Benito Zamora-Alvarez, who claims to have been in the U.S. without authorization since 1994, and Hector Miranda Mendoza, another Mexican citizen found to be here illegally. It’s a lineup that raises tough questions about enforcement and border security policies.

Serious Penalties for a Dangerous Act

Beyond criminal penalties, the FAA can slap civil fines of up to $11,000 per laser incident, escalating to $30,800 for multiple violations. That’s a financial gut punch for anyone foolish enough to point a laser at an aircraft, and rightly so.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin didn’t mince words, stating, “These four illegal aliens endangered the lives of our CBP personnel.” Her point lands hard—when you jeopardize pilots, you’re playing with the safety of everyone in the sky and below.

McLaughlin also highlighted a broader concern: “DHS law enforcement is facing a 1,000% increase in attacks against them.” It’s a staggering statistic that should make anyone pause and consider the growing risks our border agents face daily in a climate of escalating hostility.

These arrests come amidst a troubling wave of aggression against federal personnel, a point McLaughlin drove home with references to recent violent incidents near ICE facilities. It’s a chilling backdrop to an already dangerous act, like a laser strike on a helicopter.

The incident in Portland isn’t just a standalone crime; it’s a symptom of deeper challenges in securing our borders and protecting those tasked with the job. While empathy for individual struggles is important, the rule of law must hold firm against actions that threaten public safety.
