Kamala Harris falsely claims Biden reduced electricity costs

Vice President Kamala Harris inaccurately stated that President Joe Biden reduced electricity expenses for Americans.

Harris shared the comments during a speech at Bowie State University in Maryland this week.

The comments

“For working families, we have reduced heating and electricity bills so folks have more money in their pocket to buy things like school supplies, replace the dishwasher, or take a family vacation," Harris said.

The vice president later added, "we do this work because we know that when we lower costs for working people, when working people can buy a home, when working people can thrive, our nation thrives."

The facts

"The cost of natural gas rose 6.7 percent from December 2022 to January 2023, and electricity increased 0.5 percent, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) in January," Breitbart News reported.

"On a yearly bases, Harris’s claims were also false. 'The fuel oil index rose 27.7 percent over the last 12 months, while the index for electricity rose 11.9 percent, and the index for natural gas increased 26.7 percent over the same period,” the CPI reported in January,'" it added.

"The national average cost of electricity has nevertheless increased from $0.136 per kilowatt-hour in January 2021 to $0.168 per kilowatt-hour in January 2023, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, constituting a 24% increase over the two years since President Joe Biden assumed office," the Daily Wire added.

"Electricity costs had remained relatively stable for the previous decade, never exceeding $0.150 per kilowatt-hour until March 2022," it continued.

The increases in electricity and gas are part of a 40-year high of inflation Americans have experienced with Biden in office.

The problems are in addition to recent record-high gas prices nationwide, along with shipping supply issues that have often made important items unavailable for those with the money to buy them.

Baby formula has been among the most notable item in recent months, though other medications and household products have also been hard to find.

Harris offered a glowing report of an economy that doesn't exist, showing how disconnected she is from the realities of the American people.
