Kamala Harris calls current federal marijuana classification 'absurd' as she distances herself from her past

Vice President Kamala Harris, one of the most ineffective and unaccomplished vice presidents in modern U.S. history, weighed in on an interesting subject recently.

According to Politico, during a White House event on Friday, Harris made it clear that she believes the current federal classification of marijuana is "absurd."

There has been a push, mostly from the left, to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level, especially as more states continue to legalize the drug both for medical and recreational use.

During the roundtable discussion regarding the drug on Friday at the White House, Harris said she "looks forward" to the Drug Enforcement Administration's consideration to move the drug into a different category.

Convenient timing

While the economy continues to burn and Americans struggle to afford groceries and gas under the Biden-Harris administration, marijuana classification has apparently risen to the top of the priority list ahead of the 2024 election.

Her words come as many await a final decision from the DEA on whether or not it will place the drug in a less restrictive category. Currently, it's still federally classified as a Schedule I narcotic, next to cocaine and heroin.

The Department of Health and Human Services formally recommended to the DEA that marijuana be moved to a lesser category under the Controlled Substances Act.

Politico noted:

Biden also cited his moves to pardon federal marijuana offenders and loosen federal weed restrictions during last week’s State of the Union address. A whopping 70 percent of Americans back marijuana legalization, and that position is particularly popular with young voters, a crucial demographic that Biden is struggling to maintain support from.

President Joe Biden has pardoned several people who had marijuana-related charges since taking office.

Social media reacts

Many across social media reacted to Harris' statement regarding the situation, with some suggesting that she and Biden are clearly highlighting the issue to grab votes from younger voters. Others pointed out the hypocrisy in her words, as she had a reputation for locking up marijuana offenders in California while she was its attorney general.

"She loves weed now because she thinks it’s going to get her some of that young vote! She didn’t mind locking up lots of black folk in California over weed," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "After she jailed thousands when she was district[t] attorney."

Only time will tell how hard the Biden-Harris campaign pushes the issue ahead of the November election.
