Douglas County Probate Judge Christina Peterson was arrested early Thursday morning following an altercation with an Atlanta police officer outside a nightclub. The arrest, captured on bodycam footage, has prompted scrutiny of Peterson’s behavior as well as her past judicial performance.
Fox News reported that the arrest occurred outside the Red Martini Restaurant and Lounge, where an Atlanta police officer was on duty for an approved extra job.
At approximately 3:18 a.m., the officer heard a disturbance and approached to investigate. Upon arrival, he observed security personnel escorting a woman out of the venue.
Amidst the commotion, Judge Christina Peterson, aged 38, charged toward the scene, shouting at both the security guard and the officer.
Following her sudden arrival, Peterson allegedly shoved the officer in the chest while shouting, "Let her f—ing go," and interfering with the officer's attempts to assist the female patron being removed. As the situation escalated, Peterson swiped at the officer's hands, physically confronting him a second time.
Peterson subsequently refused to reveal her identity to the officers on the scene, which led to her being handcuffed and placed in the back of a police vehicle.
Bodycam footage from the incident, subsequently released by the Atlanta police, shows Peterson cursing at the officer, refusing cooperation, and resisting detention. Her vocal refusal to provide her identity resulted in arrest warrants being issued for simple battery against a police officer and obstruction of law enforcement.
Peterson, who was taken to Fulton County Jail for processing, is represented by lawyer and Fulton County Commissioner Marvin Arrington Jr. Both Peterson and Arrington convened a press conference to address the incident.
Arrington described Peterson's actions as an attempt to defend Alexandria Love, a woman outside the lounge who claimed to have been attacked.
Love provided her account of the incident, alleging that she was violently assaulted and that Peterson was the only person to come to her assistance. Arrington called for the release of surveillance footage that he believes will support Peterson's version of events and demonstrate that her arrest was unwarranted.
Peterson has served as a probate judge since 2020. However, her judicial career has already been marred by controversy. In April, a Judicial Qualifications Commission panel found her guilty of "systemic incompetence," recommending her removal from office due to numerous failures and instances of misconduct.
The commission's findings have been elevated to the Georgia Supreme Court, which will ultimately decide whether Peterson will be removed from her judicial post.
