Joe Rogan guest who pushed criminal justice reform charged with murder

A man who recently appeared as a guest on Joe Rogan's podcast has been charged with murder.

Fox News identifies the man as 48-year-old Sheldon Johnson.

Johnson is a staffer at a public law firm in New York City. He has claimed to be a reformed ex-convict. In fact, during his appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, he insisted that he had turned his life around.

But, now, with the murder charge, Johnson's claim is being called into question.

A gruesome discovery

According to NBC News, New York law enforcement recently made a gruesome discovery while conducting a welfare check in a Bronx apartment building.

Per the outlet:

The gruesome discovery was made Tuesday just before 8:30 p.m. at a Summit Avenue apartment, the New York City Police Department said in a news release. "Upon arrival, officers found an unidentified human torso at the location. EMS responded and pronounced the aided deceased on scene," police said.

The victim was subsequently identified as 44-year-old Collin Small. The apartment where the torso was found did belong to Small.

Arrested and charged

Subsequently, law enforcement arrested Johnson in connection with the murder.

NBC New York reports:

Police officials said a concerned neighbor reported hearing gunshots from the unit and saw a man coming and going from the building multiple times through the night, carrying various cleaning supplies. Surveillance footage from outside the apartment's front door showed a man carrying the cleaning items as well as a full black garbage bag.

Johnson was identified as the suspect, and the outlet further reports that "after seeing Johnson on surveillance footage, they searched his apartment and found the victim’s legs, arms and head in the freezer."

Authorities have, accordingly, charged Johnson with several counts, including manslaughter, weapon possession, concealment of a human corpse, and criminal contempt.

Johnson has already made his first court appearance, and he pled "not guilty" to all charges. While walking into the courtroom, Johnson repeatedly shouted "I'm innocent" to reporters.

Just released from prison

This all comes after Johnson was recently released from prison, after having served 25 years.

NBC New York reports:

The suspect was identified as Sheldon Johnson, who previously spent 25 years in prison for attempted murder when he was a high-ranking member of the Bloods gang. In his time since being released from prison, the 48-year-old had spent his time working with the Queens Defenders office, talking about his efforts to reform himself and help other kids detach themselves from gang life.
