Leo Eric Varadkar announced his impending resignation as prime minister of Ireland on Wednesday, shortly after his visit to Washington, D.C., where he met with President Biden.
At a press conference, Varadkar disclosed his decision to step down as the president of the Fine Gael Party, effective immediately.

He also indicated his intention to vacate the prime ministerial role, known as Taoiseach, once a successor is prepared to assume the position, with an election scheduled before April 16.
Having served as Taoiseach since December 2022, with a prior tenure from 2017 to 2020, Varadkar reflected on his accomplishments during his farewell address.
Notable among these achievements was Ireland's reception of over 100,000 Ukrainian refugees following Russia's invasion. However, he acknowledged areas of less success and regression, leaving it to others to scrutinize as he bid farewell.

At the luncheon, Varadkar expressed gratitude for U.S. efforts in brokering peace between Ireland and Northern Ireland through the Good Friday Agreement.
He also addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, urging continued support for the country in its struggle against Russia, alongside aid for Israel and humanitarian assistance for Gaza.
