Ilhan Omar refuses to give Trump credit for Gaza peace deal

President Donald Trump has brokered a historic ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, yet not everyone is ready to give him a pat on the back.

Fox News reported that while the world watches Palestinians return to shattered neighborhoods and hostages reunite with loved ones, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and a few other prominent Democrats are holding back applause for Trump’s role in this breakthrough.

Let’s rewind to last Saturday, when images emerged of Palestinians trudging past rubble in Khan Younis, a somber prelude to the ceasefire’s impact. The scene set a stark backdrop for what would soon unfold.

By Monday, the remaining 20 living hostages held by Hamas were safely released, marking a significant victory for peace efforts. Trump’s administration played a central role in negotiating this agreement between Israel and Hamas. It’s the kind of result that should have everyone cheering, unless, apparently, your political lens is tinted a certain shade of blue.

On Tuesday, Rep. Omar was pressed on Trump’s involvement during an event endorsing a Minneapolis mayoral candidate. Her response? A masterclass in dodging the obvious.

“I am really delighted that we are seeing that breakthrough, and I am hesitant to be too optimistic in congratulating anyone until we see lasting peace,” Omar told Minnesota Public Radio. Well, that’s one way to sidestep giving credit where it’s due. Lasting peace is the goal, sure, but isn’t a ceasefire with hostages freed a pretty solid start?

Omar’s Hesitation Sparks Conservative Critique

Omar went on to outline her vision of peace, which sounds more like a laundry list of grievances than a nod to progress. “Lasting peace looks like no more bombs are being dropped on innocent children, that there is no destruction of infrastructure, there is no ethnic cleansing and displacement, and that there is accountability for the genocide that Israel has committed against the people of Gaza,” she added.

She didn’t stop there, insisting peace also means addressing hostages held by all parties, including the Israeli government. Fair enough, but shouldn’t the release of 20 people from Hamas captivity get at least a polite golf clap? It’s almost as if some folks would rather critique than celebrate.

Contrast this with the response from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who didn’t hesitate to commend Trump’s efforts. “Today is a wonderful day... I commend the enormous advocacy of the tireless hostage families, President Trump, his administration, and all who helped make this moment happen,” Schumer said in a statement.

Now that’s how you acknowledge a job well done, even across party lines. Not all Democrats are singing from Omar’s hymn sheet, thankfully.

Heavyweights like former Presidents Bill Clinton and Joe Biden, along with former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, have all publicly recognized Trump’s contribution to this deal. Even world leaders have tipped their hats to the president for steering this agreement to fruition.

Harris herself noted, “I commend the people who have been a part of this process.” It’s a simple statement, but it includes Trump alongside others like the Qataris and Egyptians. Sometimes, a little grace goes a long way.

Yet, Omar isn’t alone in her reluctance. New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani mirrored her stance, praising the end of violence but stopping short of crediting Trump. It’s a curious hill to stand on when the results—hostages home, bombs paused—speak for themselves.

Ceasefire Success Overshadowed by Politics

Let’s be clear: no one is saying this ceasefire solves every problem in the Middle East. But dismissing Trump’s role feels like a textbook case of progressive posturing over pragmatism.

If we can’t acknowledge steps forward, how do we ever build momentum for that “lasting peace” Omar speaks of?

Fox News Digital reached out to Omar’s office for further comment, but no response was forthcoming. Perhaps they’re still drafting a way to spin a win into a non-event.

In the meantime, the rest of us can marvel at hostages reunited with families and a rare moment of quiet in a war-torn region.
