Iconic BBC TV actor Colin Bennett dies

Fans of classic BBC television programming were saddened to learn of the death of an iconic actor in a BBC children's show.

Colin Bennett, known for his iconic role as caretaker Mr Bennett on the 1970s and 1980s-era BBC show "Take Hart," died, according to The Sun.

His son, Tom Bennett, who stars in "EastEnders" and "After Life," confirmed his father's death Friday evening.

Colin Bennett was also known for his roles in hit BBC television shows like "You Should Be So Lucky," "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," and "Luna."

Statement released

Tom Bennett paid tribute to his father on his X account, praising him for being his "hero" and acknowledging how much he loved and cared for his father, an iconic actor of his time.

"My Dad (Mr Bennett) sadly passed away 2 weeks ago today. I still don’t quite have the words. He was my hero. I will miss him more than he will ever know. I love you Dad. Xxx," the younger Bennett wrote.

Given the late actor's popularity among BBC television programming fans, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, he received an outpouring of tributes across social media from adoring fans and former colleagues.

"He wouldn’t have believed the amount of love he’s getting right now! The number of amazing replies is testament to who he was as a man & make me so very proud he was my dad! He’d be so honoured, humbled and pleased he played even a tiny part in many of your childhoods! Thankyou," his son wrote.

Another X user wrote, "Bless you man. We ALL loved your Dad. Big part of so many of our childhoods. Love to you and your family! Nick xxx."

More tributes

Many more paid tribute to the late actor on social media, with many directing their praise and condolences to his son.

"Your dad was an absolute legend. I adored Mr Bennett. Was just talking to my partner about him today, Googled, and stumbled across this sad news. He’ll be remembered fondly forever by those whose hearts he filled with laughter. I’m sorry for your loss," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "When I was little, me and my brother would play Tony Hart and Mr Bennett. I would make a lovely tower of bricks and my brother would knock them over resulting in me exclaiming: "Oh Mr Bennett." Fondly remembered to this day."

Clearly, his legacy will live on.
