Hunter Biden facing indictment at the end of this month

Hunter Biden may be indicted in the very near future.

Fox News reports:

Hunter Biden is expected to be indicted on a federal gun charge by the end of September, Special Counsel David Weiss' team told U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika on Wednesday.

The reader may remember that, previously, a controversial plea deal had been given to Hunter Biden. Prosecutors were going to allow Biden to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax counts in order to avoid jail time.

The controversy stems, in part, from the fact that Biden only had to plead guilty to these misdemeanors despite the fact that he was also accused - with convincing evidence - of lying on a federal form when purchasing a firearm, which is a felony. It is for this reason that the plea deal was referred to as a "sweetheart" deal.

Weiss, as the U.S. attorney from Delaware, was part of the plea deal. The deal ultimately fell apart upon examination by Judge Noreika. The judge found the deal to be "not standard," and, ultimately, unconstitutional.

Instead, Hunter Biden had to plead not guilty to the charges. This all took place at a hearing in July.

During the intervening period between then and now, more controversy in the matter took place. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland decided to make Weiss a special counsel, tasked with investigating Hunter Biden.

The controversy, of course, stems from the fact that Weiss was behind the plea deal and the previous investigation of Hunter Biden. If Weiss gave Hunter Biden - the son of President Joe Biden - preferential treatment in the past, why would he not continue to give him preferential treatment? It is a fair question.

Now, however, it appears that Weiss is looking to indict Hunter Biden.

In a recent court filing, Weiss wrote:

[T]he Speedy Trial Act requires that the Government obtain the return of an indictment by a grand jury by Friday, September 29, 2023, at the earliest. The Government intends to seek the return of an indictment in this case before that date.

It is not immediately clear, from the filing, what the indictment would be for. But, Fox's report indicates that the indictment is expected to be for the felony gun charge.

Even if true, it is still probably best not to jump to any conclusions, particularly the conclusion that Weiss is actually going to bring Hunter Biden to justice.

The court filing only states that Weiss may indict Biden by the end of the month. It does not state that Weiss will actually indict Biden by the end of the month. Also, even if Weiss does indict Biden, there is the possibility that Weiss will give Biden another plea deal.

We will just have to see how this plays out. But, given what we have seen thus far, there is every reason to believe that, going forward, Hunter Biden will continue to receive preferential treatment from the government.
