When Donald Trump said he was going to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, he was literally laughed at by members of the media and Democrats.
While Trump has already renamed the body of water, a bill has worked its way through the House to codify the name, but not without its challenges.
Earlier this month, the House announced that it was going to put legislation on the floor to codify the name change of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
While Trump released an executive order for the name change, another president could easily reverse it with another order.
Not surprisingly, Trump ally, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), announced the legislation, which would require all documents to now recognize the name change.
Greene announced the legislation on X, stating, “NEXT WEEK, my Gulf of America Act will make its way to the House Floor! It’s time to codify President Trump’s executive order into law. It’s OUR gulf, let’s make the name permanent!”
While Trump supporters love the idea, this has not gone over well with everyone. For instance, a bill in the Alabama legislature failed to pass through the Senate in April. Democrat State Senator Merika Coleman stated, “We’re supposed to be good stewards of the taxpayers’ dollars. So, do we have any idea how much of this is going to cost the taxpayers?”
Funny how they worry about money for something like this, but DOGE announces waste and fraud, and Democrats take them to court!
Democrats in the House also tried to block the bill, as the legislation was having issues getting out of the House Rules Committee. White House Spokesperson Anna Kelly responded, "Democrats are so overtaken with Trump Derangement Syndrome and obsessed with obstructing the President’s agenda that they will always put America last.”
She added, "As President Trump said, the Gulf of America has long been an integral asset to our nation. All future generations should be able to recognize this beautiful body of water as a sign of American greatness."
Even though Democrats tried their best to block the bill, it worked its way through the House committee, passing along a party-line vote on Monday. The bill then went on the House floor, where it passed despise the best efforts of Democrats.
Rep. Harriett Hageman (R-WY), who Trump endorsed to unseat former Rep. Cheney, stated, "Throughout our country's history, presidents have changed the names of America's lands and waters. The change we are discussing today signals to the world that America is standing tall, and that we are proud of our country.”
Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) was not so complimentary of the legislation, stating, "Ever since the beginning of Trump's term, House Republicans have been tripping over themselves to find new and more embarrassing ways to suck up to the president and indulge his peculiar obsessions." She later added, "This bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico is a stupid, unserious waste of time and taxpayer dollars. It's an embarrassment to the nation that it was ever introduced, let alone that it's being brought to the floor for a vote.”
Even though the bill has made it through one hurdle, it will still need 60 votes to pass in the Senate, and I don’t see seven Democrat Senators voting across the aisle on this one.
