Guam Mourning Former Governor Paul Calvo’s Passing at 90

Paul McDonald Calvo, the former governor of Guam, passed away at his home in Maite surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and entrepreneurship that has profoundly shaped the island according to The Pacific Daily.

Calvo served as Guam's governor from 1979 to 1983 and was known for his significant contributions to the island's economic reform, public service, and business community.

Calvo's life journey began on July 25, 1934. He rose to prominence not only as a public official but also as a successful businessman, building an expansive family enterprise with his brothers Edward and Thomas. His businesses span various sectors, including insurance, real estate, and retail.

Calvo’s Political and Business Journey

Calvo initially made his mark as a senator in the Guam Legislature before he ascended to the governorship. As Governor, his administration was noted for notable economic reforms and the establishment of the Guam National Guard in 1981.

Calvo's legacy in business is deeply intertwined with his community impact. The enterprises he helped construct have provided employment to numerous residents and are an integral part of daily life on the island.

President of the Guam Business News awarded him Executive of the Year in 1992. His impact on Guam's economic landscape was further recognized with his induction into the Guam Chamber of Commerce’s Business Hall of Fame in 2007.

His passing was marked by a family statement expressing their profound love and dedication, as Calvo’s wife of 68 years, Rosa Baza Calvo, their eight children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were present during his final moments.

In recognition of his influence, Guam's current Governor Lou Leon Guerrero ordered that U.S. and Guam flags be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of Calvo's interment.

The Governor noted Calvo's leadership during his tenure and how his policies laid foundational courses for the island’s progression. "Our hearts go out to the Calvo family during this time of great loss," Lou Leon Guerrero remarked.

Community Leaders Reflect

Various community leaders paid tribute to Calvo's lasting influence. Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio said, "We have truly lost a giant," emphasizing how Calvo's business endeavors became central to the community.

Speaker Therese Terlaje highlighted Calvo's role in economic rebuilding and Republican politics, describing him as a senior statesman pivotal to Guam's development.

The Republican Party of Guam reflected on Calvo’s lifetime of commitment to the island's prosperity, acknowledging his leadership as grounded in humility.

Archbishop Ryan Jimenez acknowledged Calvo's faith and dignity, emphasizing him as a role model not just for his family but for Guam as a whole. He stated that while Calvo will be missed, the community is grateful for his contributions.

Vice Speaker Tina Muña Barnes expressed admiration by noting that Calvo was a figure whose legacy current leaders aspire to follow. "Governor Paul Calvo was truly a giant whose shoulders all leaders after him stand upon," she said.

His legacy as a family man was echoed by Sen. Dwayne San Nicolas, who shared that for him, Calvo wasn't just a prominent figure but also a personal hero.

A Revered Statesman

Delegate James Moylan lauded Calvo's role in diversifying the family business and contributing to the community as a corporate partner. He emphasized that the businesses Calvo helped grow have provided products and services vital to Guam.

Calvo's influence extended beyond economic and political realms through his involvement in the Catholic community, actively supporting the Agaña parish and archdiocese.

As the island of Guam mourns, his contributions to its society and economy continue to resonate, leaving an indelible mark on its history.
