GOP leadership hints at possibility of holding DHS Sec. Mayorkas in contempt

There's no hiding it at this point - the immigration crisis at the southern U.S. border is beyond chaotic and dangerous, and somebody will have to answer for that.

According to the Washington Examiner, if Republicans get their way, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas will be on the chopping block, as the proverbial buck ultimately stops with him.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) is leading the charge in holding Mayorkas accountable.

Earlier this week, he suggested that the door is open to hold Mayorkas in contempt of Congress after failing to answer specific immigration-related questions from three House committees.

Those questions revolved around the number of arrests that have been made at the southern border of illegal crossers who also happen to be on the FBI's terrorist watch list. It's an important question that all American citizens have a right to know.

The Examiner noted:

A spokeswoman for Scalise said Mayorkas had opened himself up to serious consequences by withholding national security information, including being held in contempt of Congress and impeachment.

"All options are on the table," said Scalise spokeswoman Lauren Fine in an email to the Washington Examiner.

There have also been numerous calls for Mayorkas' impeachment.

The Examiner added:

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), House Oversight and Government Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-KY), and House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) had asked Mayorkas in a May 19 letter to provide documents and other information about the increasing number of illegal immigrants with terrorism ties who were apprehended at the southern border.

In Scalise's press release, he noted that Mayorkas failed to answer those critical questions, which are undoubtedly an issue of national security and overall American safety.

There have been several incidents of border crossers being arrested who turn out to have been on the FBI's terror watch list.  The most recent example happened in May, where a Pakistani on the watch list was arrested in Arizona.

With millions of illegals crossing the border on President Joe Biden's watch, there's simply no telling how many of them pose a threat to national security. And there's also no telling how many have gotten away.

Many believe that terrorist organizations are using Biden's weak border policies to sneak sleeper cells into the United States for a future attack. Mayorkas doesn't seem to want to prioritized that possibility.

Only time will tell if Republicans will move forward with contempt charges or impeachment, but at this point, many are probably asking what in the world they're waiting for.
