Gavin Newsom says DeSantis' migrant flights are kidnapping

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) accused Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) of kidnapping migrants who were flown from Florida to other states.

Newsom's laughable attacks made media headlines but fail to match the reality of the situation.

The background

"Last fall, DeSantis sent a planeload of migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, the offshore haven where the members of the Democratic Party elite have homes," Breitbart News reported.

"The island, unable to accommodate the migrants despite the proliferation of political signs welcoming immigrants to the country, relocated the migrants to a shelter on a mainland military base within 24 hours," it added.

The claim

"Every person who, being out of this state, abducts or takes by force or fraud any person contrary to the law of the place where that act is committed, and brings, sends, or conveys that person within the limits of this state, and is afterwards found within the limits thereof, is guilty of kidnapping," read the snippet of legal code Newsom attached to his tweet.

Newsom accused DeSantis of being a "small, pathetic man" in his post.

“My Administration is also working with the California Department of Justice to investigate the circumstances around who paid for the group’s travel and whether the individuals orchestrating this trip misled anyone with false promises or have violated any criminal laws, including kidnapping,” Newsom claimed.

Newsom has been an ongoing thorn against DeSantis, especially on issues related to immigration. Some speculate that the California governor still plans a 2024 surprise run for president though he has spoken out against doing so.

Others believe Newsom is setting himself up for a 2028 presidential run by setting himself up in contrast with DeSantis who is running as a GOP presidential candidate.

Whatever the strategy, DeSantis has continued to win among conservatives who see him as the top alternative outside of a Trump comeback attempt.

The shadow battle between the two governors may be an attempt for Newsom to gain some spotlight now but DeSantis has his eyes on winning the GOP nomination.
