Former professional hockey player Tomas Kloucek, known for his time on the ice with the New York Rangers and other NHL teams, has died at the age of 45 following a ski-related accident in Czechia.
Fox News reported that the tragic news was confirmed by his wife, Barbara Klouckova, who shared their loss with the public on social media, while the NHL Alumni Association also paid tribute to his memory.
Kloucek's early life in the NHL began when the New York Rangers selected him with their 131st pick in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
Demonstrating potential, he joined the Rangers at the young age of 20, participating in 43 games during the 2000-01 season. During that debut season, he logged one goal and contributed four assists.
The defenseman ended up playing a total of 95 games over three seasons with the Rangers. His time in New York came to a close when he was traded to the Nashville Predators before the 2002-03 season. However, his opportunities with the Predators were marred by a debilitating knee injury, causing him to play in just three games that season.
Kloucek returned to the ice at the start of the 2003-04 season with the Predators. Midway through the season, a trade saw him join the Atlanta Thrashers.
Throughout his five-season tenure in the NHL, Kloucek appeared in 141 games. During that period, he achieved two goals and eight assists, marking his contributions in the league.
With his NHL career concluding after the 2006-07 season, Kloucek returned to his roots in Czechia. There, he had the opportunity to play for several well-known local teams, including Slavia Praha, HC Zlin, Bili Tygri Liberec, and Ocelari Trinec.
His professional journey continued on an international scale when he moved to France, demonstrating his skills in Ligue Magnus during the 2016-17 campaign.
Throughout his career, Kloucek was admired for his resilience and dedication on the ice. His transition to local and international teams after his NHL days showcased his enduring passion for the sport and his adaptability as an athlete.
The distressing news of Kloucek's passing was publicly shared by his wife, Barbara Klouckova, on Monday. She confirmed his untimely death through a heartfelt message on Instagram, expressing her sorrow and requesting privacy during their time of grief.
"Yesterday, after a grievous accident, my husband, my universe, my love, the dad of our children, and your friend Tomas Kloucek abandoned us forever," she shared.
Additionally, the NHL Alumni Association issued a statement expressing their deepest sympathies to Kloucek’s loved ones. "We send our deepest condolences to Tomas’ friends, family, and former teammates during this incredibly difficult time," the association stated in a solemn tribute.
In remembrance of Kloucek, the New York Rangers, his former team, held a moment of silence before their game against the Calgary Flames at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. This poignant gesture underscored the impact Kloucek had on those who knew him and the organizations he was a part of.
