Former New Orleans Saints linebacker Ronald Powell found dead at 32

Former New Orleans Saints linebacker Ronald Powell, 32, has died, Breitbart reported. No cause of death was provided in the announcement made on social media by the NFL Players Association.

"Today we mourn the loss of Ronald Powell – a father, a brother, and a son who was loved and cherished by so many. We send comfort to all those who knew Ronald," the X account for the NFLPA's retired players shared Tuesday.

Powell showed his talent in high school and was considered a No. 1 prospect, Fox News reported. He played college football with the University of Florida Gators between 2010 and 2013.

In 2012, Powell was sidelined with a torn ACL. Still, he was picked in the fifth round of the draft to play with the Saints in 2014 and played in 14 games during that first season.

By the 2015 season, the Saints shifted Powell to the injured reserve list. He would go on to join the Chicago Bears as a member of the practice squad in September 2016, followed by the same position with the Seattle Seahawks.

Unfortunately, Powell would not play in another NFL game for either team. However, in 2019, Powell signed on with the Orlando Apollos in the Alliance of American Football League before it was disbanded.

Although he did not make a comeback in football, Powell's former Saints teammate, Junior Galette, remembered him fondly.  "I Love You Forever till we meet again an EXCELLENT FATHER Respected Brother and a Loving Son I am saddened to shared with the rest of the world that Ronald Powell Transitioned Earlier today," Galette posted to X.

REST IN POWER RONALD POWELL ….." he added. The Saints X account posted its own tribute to the late former player, People reported.

“We’re very saddened to learn about the passing of former Saint Ronald Powell. We send our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time," the team said.

The Gators similarly sent a tribute to their former linebacker. "We’re very saddened to learn about the passing of former Gators player Ronald Powell," the college team's social media said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones," the Gators shared on X. Powell left behind two children, son Ronald N.M Powell, 5, and Romy Mehaiah Powell, 3, WXIN-TV reported.

This tragic passing of this young former athlete comes on the heels of another loss that came too soon. In November, the University of Minnesota Duluth defensive end Reed Ryan, 22, died suddenly, the New York Post reported.

Ryan had a previously undetected heart defect that caused him to go into cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, efforts to revive the young man were not successful.

It's still unclear whether Powell died from natural causes or something else. Still, the untimely death of a man in his prime is an occasion to mourn for a person with his life ahead of him.
