Tom Voyce, an esteemed former England rugby player, is presumed dead following a tragic accident during Storm Darragh.
National World reported that the ex-rugby star's car was overtaken by floodwaters while attempting to cross a river in Northumberland, leading to his disappearance.
Voyce was last seen after spending an evening with friends. His journey home was interrupted by the severe conditions brought on by Storm Darragh, a powerful storm that caused significant flooding across Northumberland.
Attempting to return home, Voyce tried to cross the River Aln near Alnwick. The river, swollen from the storm's intense rainfall, proved too much for his vehicle. Northumbria Police were alerted to his absence early Sunday morning following the incident.
Despite finding his vehicle, efforts to locate Voyce have been unsuccessful. The ongoing search has seen the involvement of multiple rescue teams.
Northumbria Police's Marine Section, along with the National Police Air Service and volunteers from the North of Tyne Mountain Rescue, have all been mobilized in the search. They have utilized drones, dog handlers, and their marine unit in an extensive effort to find Voyce.
"At this time, it is suspected Tom has attempted to cross Abberwick Ford in his car, which has then been pulled along with the current of the river," a Northumbria Police spokesperson said. "It is believed in his attempts to escape he has been swept away and tragically died."
The search operations have been hampered by the adverse weather conditions, which have kept the river levels and flow dangerously high.
Chief Superintendent Helena Barron of Northumbria Police described the incident as extremely tragic. "Our thoughts are very much with Tom’s loved ones at this time," she stated, assuring that the police are providing continuous support to his family.
The police effort is supported by the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, which provided a swift water team and lighting to aid in the nighttime search. "Our teams also secured the car to the bankside. NFRS has since been stood down by the police," a spokesperson for the fire service reported.
Tom Voyce had a notable rugby career before retiring in May 2013. He played for England nine times and made 220 appearances in the Premiership, mainly with Wasps and Gloucester.
Throughout his career, Voyce was celebrated for his dedication and skill on the field. His premature retirement was a loss to the sport, but he left behind a legacy of great performances and sportsmanship.
"This is an extremely tragic incident, and our thoughts are very much with Tom’s loved ones at this time," reiterated Chief Superintendent Barron, emphasizing the depth of the community's grief.
The search for Voyce continues, with local authorities and community members coming together to provide any assistance possible.
"Anna and all his family have expressed their gratitude for all the help and support from the police, friends, and the local community in helping find Tom," added a police spokesperson.
