Former Congressman Rick Nolan Passes Away at 80

Rick Nolan, a former Democratic congressman from Minnesota’s Eighth District, has died at the age of 80. He is remembered for his passionate speeches, strong personal connections, and a long career that included a notable political comeback in the 2010s.

The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that Nolan's remarkable career spanned decades, marked by his return to political prominence after initially serving in the 1970s.

Before his passing, Nolan was actively campaigning for Democratic candidate Lorrie Janatopoulos in Minnesota House District 7B.

Despite being in his advanced years, he delivered a powerful speech and even participated in door-knocking efforts, demonstrating his enduring commitment to the Democratic cause.

Nolan Returns to Political Spotlight

Nolan was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1974, emerging as one of the "Watergate babies" following President Nixon's resignation. His early political career came to an end in 1981 when he decided to step away from office, but his passion for public service never waned.

In the 2010s, Nolan staged a political comeback that surprised many. In 2012, he reclaimed his seat in the Eighth District after defeating Republican Chip Cravaack. This victory marked a triumphant return to the U.S. House, highlighting Nolan's enduring appeal to northern Minnesota voters.

Once back in Congress, Nolan continued to make his mark. In 2015, he was recognized as one of the top 10 most effective lawmakers in the country. He achieved further success by winning the 2016 election in a district that leaned towards then-President Trump.

Despite these successes, Nolan chose not to seek re-election in 2018. He expressed a desire to spend more time with his family and cited the rigorous demands of a competitive campaign as a factor in his decision.

His passion for his family was evident, especially given the loss he experienced when his daughter, Katherine Bensen, passed away in 2020 after battling Stage 4 lung cancer.

Throughout his career, Nolan was celebrated for his dedication to northern Minnesota and his environmental advocacy. He was a staunch supporter of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, consistently upholding its preservation as a wilderness area. His commitment to the region earned him praise from colleagues and constituents alike.

Nolan also made an unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor in 2018, running alongside gubernatorial candidate Lori Swanson. Despite finishing third in the primary, his candidacy was characterized by his continued devotion to public service and the state of Minnesota.

Legacy of Passionate Leadership

Minnesota politicians and colleagues have been vocal in their remembrance of Nolan. Jeff Anderson described Nolan's speeches as reminiscent of old-time politicians, characterized by fervor and passion.

Governor Tim Walz remarked on Nolan's ability to deliver speeches that could "blow the lid off a roof." U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum highlighted his generosity, noting that Nolan would share items he harvested, hunted, or gathered with others.

Ken Martin commended Nolan as a champion for northern Minnesota and a dedicated public servant.

Don Ness likened Nolan's fierce dedication to that of former politician Paul Wellstone. Kevin Proescholdt praised Nolan for consistently valuing the protection of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Nolan's long-standing connection with Minnesota was evident, as noted by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who described him as an outdoorsman who never forgot his roots. She also referred to him as the "comeback kid" due to his ability to reintegrate into the political arena.

Sen. Grant Hauschild expressed admiration for Nolan's optimism and dedication to uplifting future leaders. He remarked on Nolan's profound commitment to the region, noting that his legacy would endure among the political figures who have made significant contributions to northern Minnesota.

Rick Nolan leaves behind his wife, Mary, along with a large extended family that includes four children and more than a dozen grandchildren. His life's work and commitment to public service have left an indelible mark on Minnesota and its political landscape.

As colleagues and admirers reflect on his contributions, Nolan is remembered as a passionate leader and a true champion of his constituents.
