In a significant political shift, Representative Hillary Cassel of Florida announced her decision to switch from the Democratic Party to the GOP.
In a move less than two months post her reelection, Cassel declared her shift citing disillusionment with her former party's policies according to One America News.
Representative Cassel revealed her decision through a statement on social media on an unspecified date, marked as 'X'.
Her announcement follows closely on the heels of another Florida Democrat, Tampa state Representative Susan Valdés, who also switched to the GOP last month.
Identifying as a proud Jewish woman, Cassel expressed growing concerns over her former party’s stance on Israel and its indulgence of what she considers extremist views.
“The decision was not made lightly but comes from a deep sense of responsibility to my constituents and my commitment to the values that guide my service,” said Cassel, highlighting the seriousness of her decision.
Cassel's dissatisfaction stems from what she perceives as the Democratic Party's inadequate support for Israel and their tolerance towards extreme progressive ideologies that, in her view, may justify or condone terrorism.
“As a proud Jewish woman, I have been increasingly troubled by the Democratic Party’s failure to unequivocally support Israel and its willingness to tolerate extreme progressive voices that justify or condone acts of terrorism,” she reiterated in her statement.
This sentiment is echoed by her fellow defector, Susan Valdés, who shared similar concerns about the party’s alignment with mainstream Floridian values.
Both Cassel and Valdés have voiced their troubles with the Democratic Party's connection with everyday Floridians.
Cassel emphasized, “I’m constantly troubled by the inability of the current Democratic Party to relate to everyday Floridians.”
Her decision to switch parties is rooted in a desire to better represent her constituents and adhere to her personal values, which she felt were no longer aligned with those of the Democratic Party.
“I can no longer remain in a party that doesn’t represent my values,” Cassel stated, marking a pivotal point in her political career.
Despite her party switch, Cassel was quick to acknowledge that she might not align perfectly with every Republican stance. However, she expressed confidence in the GOP’s respect for her views and their collaborative approach.
“Although I won’t agree with every Republican on every detail, I am certain that the party will always respect, collaborate with, and give me input,” she explained, signifying her readiness to engage in bipartisan cooperation for the betterment of her state.
She further reassured her constituents of her unwavering commitment to improving her community and state. “I ran for office to make my community and this state better. I want my constituents to know my resolve to deliver on these promises has never been stronger,” Cassel affirmed, signaling her continued dedication to public service regardless of party lines.
The recent shifts by Cassel and Valdés highlight a growing trend of political realignment in Florida, reflecting broader national shifts and the evolving political landscape in the United States.
