FBI Confirms Identity Of The Shooter in Trump Assassination Attempt

In a shocking turn of events, an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump occurred during a political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

USA Today reported that Trump was injured, and three attendees were shot, one fatally, in an attack by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was subsequently killed by U.S. Secret Service officers. The FBI confirmed Crooks's identity as the shooter.

The incident took place on July 13 when Crooks, from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, opened fire from an elevated position outside the rally venue. Trump had been speaking for about five minutes and was showing a chart of border crossing numbers when the gunman began his assault.

Three attendees, all adult men, were hit by gunfire. One of the victims died, while the other two were critically injured. Trump was escorted off the stage at 6:15 p.m. and was quickly driven to a hospital in an SUV by Secret Service officers.

FBI Leads the Investigation

The FBI confirmed the identity of the shooter during a late-evening news conference, though his name was initially undisclosed. The Bureau, along with Pennsylvania State Police, is actively investigating the scene, and the site remains a crime scene.

The FBI and U.S. Secret Service are collaborating closely, with Crooks' DNA and biometrics under examination to uncover more information about his motives. Kevin P. Rojek from the FBI stated, "We have intelligence analysts as well, working from our field office in Pittsburgh, working feverishly to identify the individual who did this and any motives."

The weapon used in the attack was an AR-style rifle, which contributed to the sense of chaos and violence experienced by those present.

Former President Trump was later seen stepping off his plane in Newark, New Jersey, and reported to be "doing well." He plans to attend the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee to accept the party's presidential nomination.

Trump expressed his gratitude to law enforcement and first responders, saying, "I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania."

He also extended his condolences to the victims' families, adding, "Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country."

Eyewitness Accounts of the Shooting

Witnesses described the terror that unfolded. "We were standing on chairs watching President Trump speak, and I saw him go down. By four or five shots, I realized it was a shooting, so I got down and I told people around me to get down," recounted one spectator.

Ivanka Trump posted a message to her father on social media, saying, "I love you Dad, today and always."

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro acknowledged the successful evacuation of Trump, noting, "Under the protection of U.S. Secret Service and with the assistance of the Pennsylvania State Police, former President Trump has now left the Butler area."

The attack drew swift condemnation from President Joe Biden, who emphasized the importance of national unity. "There's no place in America for this type of violence. It's sick. It's one reason why we have to unite this country," Biden stated.

Vice President Kamala Harris echoed Biden’s sentiments, stressing the need to reject such acts. In response to the situation, Biden returned to Washington, D.C., to stay updated.

A White House statement confirmed, "Tonight, President Biden is returning to Washington, D.C. He will continue to receive regular updates from Homeland Security and law enforcement officials."

Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz condemned the violence, calling it “deeply jarring” and “un-American.” He stated, "There's no place for this type of violence in our country and our politics."

Jeff Simpson, a former law enforcement officer who witnessed the shooting, described seeing a "cloud of smoke" rising from behind the podium. The chaotic scene left many in shock and disbelief.

Colonel Chris Paris of the Pennsylvania State Police shared his thoughts, "The thoughts and prayers of the Pennsylvania police are with the victims of this terrible act."

Preparing for the Future

As the investigation continues, the FBI and other authorities remain focused on uncovering the shooter’s motives. Their efforts aim to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure public safety.

Trump’s campaign has released a statement confirming that more details will follow as they become available. In the meantime, Trump remains committed to his political endeavors, looking forward to his appearance in Milwaukee.

The community, along with national leaders, continues to grapple with the impact of this violent episode, urging for peace and unity in the face of such adversity.

In summary, the country mourns the lives affected by this tragic event, with a collective hope for healing and a restored sense of security. The ongoing investigation is a testament to the resilience and determination of those dedicated to protecting the nation and upholding justice.
