FBI arrests independent conservative journalist David Medina on Jan. 6 charges

On Friday, the FBI apprehended David Medina, an Oregon-based independent conservative journalist and content creator, on charges linked to the January 6 protest and riot at the US Capitol.

Medina, 34, from Sherwood, Oregon, became the latest target of the Biden administration's Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding alleged activities on January 6, 2021.

The charges

He faces charges of felony obstruction of an official proceeding and multiple misdemeanors, including destruction of government property and disorderly conduct in a restricted building or grounds.

In response, Medina asserted his intention to plead not guilty, potentially facing up to three years in prison if convicted. The felony obstruction charge, utilized by the DOJ to prosecute hundreds of non-violent protesters, serves as a focal point in the ongoing investigation.

Formerly associated with PragerU and recognized as one of Oregon's prominent conservatives, Medina disclosed that his supporters fundraised for his travel expenses to attend the January 6 rally, emphasizing the significance of standing by then-President Donald J. Trump amidst mainstream media's alleged narrative bias.

The FBI raid

Following the January 6 incident, the FBI conducted a raid at Medina's residence. However, no further action was taken until the recent arrest.

Medina disclosed his subsequent termination from various jobs, including his position at Oregon's Youth Correctional Facility MacClaren.

Despite reaching out to the FBI to address the matter, Medina found himself in custody after visiting their office, enduring the distressing experience of being handcuffed in front of his teenage daughter.

The case

The DOJ accuses Medina of being present on Capitol grounds and participating in the unlawful entry into the US Capitol building. Allegations include purported involvement in damaging government property and brandishing a flag allegedly taken from inside the Rotunda.

Medina, who prioritizes his commitment to Christ and youth work, expressed profound repercussions resulting from the prolonged ordeal. He underscored the personal toll, including the dissolution of his marriage and the impact on his family.

In response to his arrest, Medina's social media following rallied support, highlighting his advocacy for truth and conservative values amidst challenges posed by residing in Portland, Oregon, known for its left-leaning disposition.

Criticism towards the DOJ's handling of the aftermath of January 6 persists, with accusations of selective prosecution juxtaposed with leniency towards far-left factions.

As investigations continue, Medina's case reveals that the impact of the Jan. 6 riot continues more than four years after the event, impacting the 2024 election as well.
