Well, that did not take too long.
It was only a few weeks ago that ESPN host Stephen A. Smith said the talk of him running for president was ridiculous. Now, he is changing his stance, saying that if Dems don’t find someone better, he may not have a choice.
Democrats should have taken the 2024 election as a wake-up call, but they clearly did not get the message.
Early polling is nearly a repeat of the 2020 cycle, where Joe Biden came out of the pack as the leader even though the man barely left his basement.
The frontrunners for the Democrat Party now are Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, with a host of other low-interest candidates.
Ironically, Harris is considered the true frontrunner because apparently, the Democrat Party does not believe the 2020 primary flop and the 2024 loss to Trump really happened. They have convinced themselves that if Harris had more time, she could have won the race (even though she went backward from the time she was announced as the candidate).
Enter Stephen A. Smith, who has tried to be a calming voice for voters as well as openly calling out Democrats for how they are acting.
For instance, the party is torching Whitmer for having joined Trump at the White House for a recent meeting, but Smith is recognizing that all she is doing is playing the game.
Smith defended Whitmer, stating, “She’s the governor of Michigan. She has no choice but to do that, and anybody that thinks otherwise is just being foolish and immature and childish.
“The fact is she’s the governor of a state in the United States of America. You need to do business with the federal government. He’s the president of the United States, you don’t get to circumvent him. So, as a result, you have to be an adult in the room and be prepared to do business and anybody who would encourage her to do otherwise is just being utterly ridiculous.”
This is the type of nonsense that Smith believes has cost Democrats in the past, as well as their obsession with resisting everything the bad orange man does, even if it makes them all hypocrites.
To that point, Smith is now so disappointed in Democrats, he is thinking about running himself, and there appears to be outside interest, with Smith explaining, “I’ve had folks that got a lot of money, billionaires and others that have talked to me about exploratory committees and things of that nature. I’m not a politician. I’ve never had a desire to be a politician.”
He then added, “I would hope somebody else would step up that’s more qualified than me, but if it has to come down to me, it is something I would consider.”
If you ask me, Smith wants to run, and he sounds like he is taking a page out of Trump’s 2016 playbook to sell himself as an outsider who can better relate to the average person. I still don’t think Smith has the profile, but after having watched him debate on ESPN, I can tell you he sure would make the election cycle a lot of fun.
