E. Jean Carroll, who claims she was raped by Donald Trump, brags about using settlement money on shopping spree

Author E. Jean Carroll, who accused former President Donald Trump of raping her, claims she'll use her settlement money to go on a shopping spree for clothes and shoes, the New York Post reported. Carroll made these remarks on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC Monday that seemingly undermine her motivations.

The former president was ordered to pay millions to Carroll for defamation for comments made in his own defense. On Friday, a judge ruled Trump owed her $65 million because he acted "out of hatred, ill will, or spite" when he said he "never met" Carroll.

The former columnist had accused him of sexually assaulting her in the dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store sometime in 1996. Trump said it never happened and called her a "whack job" who deserves to "pay dearly" for falsely accusing him.

He's been ordered to pay $11 million to help restore her reputation and another $7.3 million for pain and suffering after Carroll received threats on her life over Trump's outspoken denials. Now Carroll said she has "such great, big ideas" for what she's going to do with the money, and it has caused a firestorm.

"You’ve talked about using some of Trump’s money you’re about to get to shore up women’s rights. Do you know what that might be, what that might look like?" Maddow said leadingly.

Just the day before, Carroll had bragged on ABC's Good Morning America that she would use her settlement money on "something Donald Trump hates." She suggested she might use set up a "fund for the women who have been sexually assaulted by Donald Trump."

However, this time, Carroll excitedly shot back that she has "such big, great ideas for all the good I’m gonna do with all this money" before sharing her cringe-worthy plans. "First thing, Rachel, you and I are going to go shopping," Carroll told the host.

"We’re going to get completely new wardrobes, new shoes. What do you want? Penthouse? It’s yours, Rachel," Carroll said.

"You want France? You want to go fishing in France?" she said.

Shawn Crowley, Carroll's attorney, had to interject that it was only "a joke." However, many on the internet rightly pointed out that this is no laughing matter.

"I am a real rape victim and have never laughed about rape. I can't even watch TV shows with rape scenes," a woman wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

"She is a fraud," she added. Another social media user wrote that the network was "vile" for allowing Carroll to speak like this.

"Talk to a real rape victim. They never laugh about anything regarding the rape or conviction. This is vile @MSNBC," an X user posted.

At the very least, it's distasteful to talk about money from a settlement this way when it involves an alleged sex crime. At its worst, it says a great deal about Carroll's motivations for pursuing legal recourse now for an incident that happened almost two decades ago.
