ABC News reports that former President Donald Trump's legal team has just found more classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
This is a continuation of the classified documents situation that Trump found himself at the center of. It's the same situation that saw the unprecedented FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago back in August.
According to ABC, the latest classified documents discovery was made during a search ordered by Trump that was carried out by his legal team. The point of the search was to ensure that there were no more classified materials at Mar-a-Lago.
This search yielded a folder with classification markings.
The Washington Examiner reports:
The folder was discovered in January in the main complex of Trump’s Florida resort, separate from a storage room where previous documents were found during a raid last year, the sources said. The classification level of the documents and the nature of the documents inside the folder were not clear.
In addition to the folder, Trump's team also found a laptop that belongs to a current aide of Trump. It is unclear who the aide is.
The laptop is said to contain classified documents that had been copied onto it.
ABC indicates that Trump and his team have handed both the folder and the laptop over to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
Trump's legal team released a statement on the matter referring to it as a continuation of the "witch hunt" of Trump.
The statement reads:
[This] is nothing more than a targeted, politically motivated witch hunt against President Trump, concocted to try and prevent the American people from returning him to the White House. Just like all the other fake hoaxes thrown at President Trump, this corrupt effort will also fail. The weaponized Department of Injustice has shown no regard for common decency and key rules that govern the legal system.
Trump's argument, that the DOJ's efforts here are politically motivated, is supported by the obvious disparity in treatment that we have seen in the DOJ's handling of the classified documents case involving Trump and the other case involving Biden.
Whereas Trump's residence was raided by the FBI, the FBI only searched Biden's residence after an agreement was reached - an agreement which allowed Biden's attorneys - unlike Trump's - to be on hand.
Besides Biden and Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence is also now dealing with a classified documents situation of his own.
What, if anything, is going to come of all of this, remains unclear.
