DOJ Asked To Investigate Trump’s Ex-Lawyer Cohen For Perjury In Front Of Congress

Michael Cohen, the former attorney for Donald Trump, has been hit with a criminal referral to the Department of Justice for allegedly misleading Congress multiple times in 2019.

The New York Post reported that two House committees, chaired by Jim Jordan and James Comer, have officially requested a DOJ probe into Cohen's conflicting testimonies.

In 2019, during a series of testimonies before Congress, Cohen was accused of lying on six different occasions.

These allegations have resurfaced as Cohen, now distanced from Trump, has become a pivotal figure in the ongoing hush-money case against the former president.

New Criminal Referral Initiated Against Cohen

The call for an investigation was made on a Wednesday by Jim Jordan of the House Judiciary Committee and James Comer of the Oversight Committee. They highlighted several instances in which Cohen’s statements to Congress appeared contradictory, particularly concerning his role in Trump’s administration and his dealings with foreign entities.

The Department of Justice had previously declined to investigate these claims in 2019, but the persistent discrepancies have led to renewed calls for legal scrutiny.

Cohen's alleged false claims were specifically regarding his efforts to secure a position within Trump's administration, his involvement with the creation of the “WomenForCohen” social media account, and undisclosed business dealings with a foreign government.

Cohen’s Admission and Role in Trump’s Hush Money Trial

Cohen has admitted to committing frauds he initially denied and spoke of his "blind loyalty" to Trump, which influenced his actions during his tenure as Trump's lawyer. These admissions are crucial as they underscore the importance of truthfulness in his earlier testimonies.

He is now a key witness in Trump's hush money trial in Manhattan, where his credibility is significantly impacting the proceedings.

This trial largely hinges on the veracity of Cohen's statements, with implications that could extend into other investigations and trials involving Trump.

Further complicating matters, Cohen faced additional accusations of lying about inflating Trump’s estate values for loans during his testimony before the House Intelligence Committee. These were later substantiated when Cohen confessed in court to adjusting asset values on Trump’s instructions.

The alleged discrepancies in Cohen’s testimonies were brought into sharp focus when Trump’s lawyers pointed out these inconsistencies, prompting Cohen to confirm that he had indeed lied under oath to Congress.

This confirmation has played a pivotal role in the House Republican leaders’ decision to request a renewed investigation into Cohen’s congressional testimonies, supported by transcripts provided to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Renewed Interest in Justice Department Investigation

With these developments, there is a heightened push from certain quarters in Congress to revisit Cohen’s testimonies and assess their legality and truthfulness.

House leaders, through their official statements, have emphasized the necessity of integrity in testimonial proceedings, stressing that truthful testimonies are crucial for the effective functioning of congressional oversight.

The Department of Justice is now faced with decisions on how to proceed with these allegations, considering the complex legal and political implications they carry.

Conclusion: Cohen's Legal Challenges and Congressional Integrity

Michael Cohen's journey from a personal attorney to a significant figure in legal battles against Trump illustrates the intricate and often tumultuous relationship between law, politics, and personal integrity. As the DOJ considers the ramifications of the criminal referral, the outcomes could have broad implications not only for Cohen but also for the broader narrative of justice and accountability in U.S. politics.
