Dems continue to push back against recognizing Kirk

Over the last few days, Republicans have made several efforts to honor Charlie Kirk.

On every occasion, Democrats pushed back.

The latest being House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who chose to skip the vigil because of a “meeting.”

Shouting Match

You knew this would be a problem right after the death of Kirk was announced, as Republicans requested a moment of silence in tribute to Kirk.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) then requested a spoken prayer, stating, "I believe silent prayers get silent results."

Numerous Democrats just about lost their minds, with one of them shouting, "What about the kids in Colorado?" This was in reference to the school shooting that took place right around the same time as the Kirk assassination.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) then got involved, telling Democrats, “You all caused this!” This led to Democrats yelling out “Pass some gun laws.” Eventually, Johnson stopped in to quiet the room.

Censure

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) filed a censure resolution against Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) for her posts about the Kirk assassination.

What I did not understand is why she only noted the reposts by Omar, such as one person having posted, “Charlie Kirk was Dr. Frankenstein, and his monster shot him through the neck.”

Omar ripped Kirk after the shooting, and her comments should have been enough, but using only the reposts gave Omar an out.

In defending herself, Omar had specifically stated that Mace failed to provide a direct quote from her, as though the things she posted were not horrific enough.

Busy

There was a congressional vigil for Kirk, but Jeffries was absent (I am honestly surprised anyone expected him to be there, as Kirk was clearly a conservative activist who had the left on edge).

When Jeffries was asked why he was not at the vigil, he responded, "I had a meeting.”

Again, I did not expect the Democrats to attend, but at least have a little class and be truthful about the reason you did not attend, not a silly excuse like that. I would at least respect the honesty.

I would note, however, there were a handful of Democrats who chose to attend, and I respect the hell out of them for that because you know party leadership, all of which was absent, is likely taking names. When Speaker Johnson (R-LA) was asked about the Democrats who missed the event, he insisted that he was not there to take names, but he was glad that it turned into a bipartisan event.
