Democrats in the House of Representatives are working to stop the impeachment of President Biden by manipulating Representative Matt Gaetz’s (R-FL) efforts to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
Gaetz needs to poach a few Democrat votes to successfully remove McCarthy and Democrats are reportedly going to use this situation to force McCarthy to drop the impeachment hearings against President Biden.
McCarthy is in an impossible position as he must either drop the hearings and face certain removal from furious Republicans or refuse and have Democrats vote with Gaetz to remove him.
One may be inclined to feel bad for McCarthy but if McCarthy had simply kept Republicans happy and kept his promises he wouldn't be in this position.
McCarthy has been a disaster since day one and the Republicans who supported his speakership ought to be ashamed. Now the GOP has a real mess on its hands to clean up while balancing impeachment and the impending government shutdown.
Representative Katherine Clark (D-MA) issued a list of demands of McCarthy saying, "We want him to live up to the agreement [on toppling spending] that he made [with President Biden]. We want to get disaster aid out. We want to continue our support for Ukraine. And we want them to end this sham of an impeachment inquiry."
If McCarthy works with Democrats, it would completely doom not only his ability to influence House Republicans, but it would likely end his political career.
Republicans have until September 30th to get a deal done or send the government into a shutdown which could create a host of issues.
McCarthy wants to avoid a shutdown but hard-line conservatives are demanding a shutdown unless serious spending cuts are made.
Democrats have made it clear that they aren't going to vote for any spending cuts and the shutdown will come down to who blinks first.
Typically it is Republicans who end up blinking and making concessions. Gaetz and his allies want to ensure that doesn't happen this time and McCarthy will be tossed from leadership if he doesn't hold the line.
Representative Chip Roy (R-TX), one of the House Freedom Caucus members threatening to force a shutdown said, "We have to hold the line."
If McCarthy doesn't fall in line, Representative Ralph Norman (R-SC) predicted, "It'd be the end of his speakership."
With just a week to go before the deadline, Americans ought to buckle up and prepare for a historic showdown that could have massive political implications.
