Democrats are criticizing House Republicans after they unanimously voted to select Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) as the next Speaker of the House.
Johnson is known for being a supporter of former President Donald Trump and questioned the 2020 election results, drawing the anger of Democrats on Wednesday.

“MAGA Mike Johnson’s ascension to the speakership cements the extreme MAGA takeover of the House Republican Conference,” Ammar Moussa, a spokesman for the Biden campaign, said in a statement, according to Breitbart News.
"Democrats in Congress expressed their deep displeasure with Johnson securing the Speaker’s gavel on the first ballot, after three weeks of chaos since Speaker Emeritus Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) ouster, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL)," it added.

"Democrats are already looking to newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) as a potential asset to damage Republicans in swing districts as the 2024 election approaches," Axios reported.
"Johnson's lack of national name recognition makes him a blank slate among voters, which both parties are trying to use to their electoral advantage," it continued.
You might be Googling who Mike Johnson is this morning.
Let me make it simple:
Johnson is a hard-right, pro-Trump, leading election denier in the House.
Sadly, this is what passes for Speaker material in the Republican conference.

"You might be Googling who Mike Johnson is this morning," Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) said in his post attacking the new speaker.
"Let me make it simple: Johnson is a hard-right, pro-Trump, leading election denier in the House. Sadly, this is what passes for Speaker material in the Republican conference," he stated.
Johnson's selection in the unanimous GOP vote was the first unanimous selection since Speaker John Boehner was selected in 2011.
The new speaker has quickly laid out his priorities, including the border crisis, stopping the flow of fentanyl and avoiding a government shutdown that could occur next month.
Johnson is already hated by Democrats, meaning that he's probably doing something right by Trump's standards as Republicans seek to get back on track after three weeks without a House leader.
