Democrats are supposed to be the party of science. However, Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams is an ideologue and clear science denier.
Abrams stated Wednesday that there is "no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks" for babies in the womb, Not the Bee reported. This flies in the face of medical knowledge that there is indeed the presence of cardiac activity early in the first trimester.
"There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks," she told the crowd at Atlanta's Ray Charles Performing Arts Center, Fox News reported. "It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman's body."

Perhaps Abrams said this in response to Georgia's Living Infants Fairness and Equality (Life) Act, one of the so-called "heartbeat" bills that prohibits abortions once a fetal heartbeat is present. The bill is less restrictive later in pregnancy and also has provisions to allow for cases of rape and incest.
It was first passed in 2019 and but struck down by a federal judge who deemed it unconstitutional before an appeal saved it. Now with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, laws like this are on rock solid ground.
Still, Abrams made a statement that flies in the face of information -- what Democrats like to call settled science in other settings -- from the Cleveland Clinic, as Not the Bee pointed out. "At about 6 weeks, a heartbeat can usually be detected," the institution's website said.
Interestingly, Abrams was pro-life until around age 30, when she eyed a run for public office. Just last week on "The View," Abrams said she supports abortion up to the moment of birth provided the "health or life" of the mother is in jeopardy.
Democrats used to smugly claim that they were the party of science to set themselves apart from Republicans who disagree on issues like climate change or abortion on demand. Now Abrams making demonstrably false claims about babies in the womb -- when will this circus end?
