Democrat Jamie Raskin demands Justice Thomas recuse himself from Trump ballot ruling

Democrats remain relentless in pursuing conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

According to the Daily Mail, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) had demanded that Thomas recuse himself from the Supreme Court hearing that will ultimately decide if states can remove Trump from the ballot next year.

Raskin is so insistent that Thomas recuse himself that he suggests punitive actions if he doesn't.

The Maryland Democrat, who happens to be one of the staunchest anti-Trump Democrats in Washington D.C., believes that Thomas shouldn't be allowed to rule in such a case given his wife, Ginni Thomas', statements and activism after the 2020 election.

The Daily Mail noted:

Raskin joins other Democrats who say Justice Thomas cannot fairly rule on the case because of his wife Ginni Thomas' comments supporting Trump in the wake of the Capitol attack and pushing the claim that the 2020 presidential election was rigged or stolen.

Raskin made his thoughts on the matter known during a recent CNN interview.

"He should – oh, he absolutely should recuse himself,' Raskin said, adding, "The question is, what do we do if he doesn't recuse himself?"

Raskin continued, saying the "Supreme Court has developed what they're describing as a code of ethics… they're deciding for themselves again whether they're in violation of their code of ethics."

He doubled down, calling out Ginni Thomas for her support for Trump after the 2020 election results were in.

"Anybody looking at this [case] in any kind of dispassionate, reasonable way would say, if your wife was involved in the 'big lie' and claiming that Donald Trump had actually won the presidential election and had been agitating for that and participating in the events leading up to January 6, that you shouldn't be participating in' a case involving the ex-president," Raskin said.

Many believe the Supreme Court will settle the matter in Trump's favor.

Even if Thomas recuses himself, which is unlikely, the high court still leans heavily in Trump's favor.

The high court's final ruling on the matter will undoubtedly affect efforts in other states, like Maine, to keep Trump off of the 2024 primary ballot. Only time will tell how it all works out.
