Decades-old video of Hillary Clinton dancing to 'La Macarena' surfaces

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton found herself in the spotlight when a video captured her attempting to dance to the iconic '90s hit "La Macarena" at a party in Spain.

The incident unfolded after her diplomatic meeting with Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, in Madrid.

The background

Following the official engagement, Clinton journeyed to Seville, where she became the guest of honor at a celebratory event held at the prestigious Palacio de Dueñas.

The video, widely shared on Instagram, showcases Clinton being invited to dance with the renowned duo Los del Rio, who popularized "La Macarena."

Positioned in front of a lively crowd, Clinton endeavors to mimic the dance moves associated with the classic '90s track. However, her unfamiliarity with the choreography becomes apparent, creating a moment that some observers characterized as cringe-worthy.

Spanish media reacts

Spanish news outlet The Olive Press didn't shy away from highlighting the awkwardness of Clinton's dance attempt during her visit on January 19.

The publication noted the irony of her lack of dance knowledge, considering that "La Macarena" had been a staple at Democratic Party events during her husband's re-election campaign.

The timing of Clinton's trip coincided with the 30th anniversary of the song, which had become an unofficial anthem for Bill Clinton's successful 1996 campaign.

The event

The party, held at the invitation of the Duchess of Montoro, Eugenia Martínez de Irujo, and co-hosted by her husband and the president of Universal Music Spain, Narcís Rebollo, drew a notable guest list.

In attendance were prominent Spanish artists and performers, including David Bisbal, Pablo López, and Vanesa Martín.

The episode not only added a lighthearted touch to Clinton's visit but also became a moment of cultural intersection as she engaged with the infectious beats of "La Macarena." Despite the cringe-worthy aspect, the video encapsulates a spontaneous and amusing instance of a prominent political figure letting loose in a social setting.

As the footage circulated online, it sparked commentary on Clinton's dance skills, or lack thereof, and prompted reflections on the cultural resonance of "La Macarena."

The incident continues to haunt Clinton as she speaks out in support of President Joe Biden's presidential reelection campaign, offering yet another negative video for the former Secretary of State years after her official service to the country has ended.
