DC curfew in place after rise in violence around the city

Not long after taking office, Donald Trump made the controversial call to federalize DC to crack down on crime.

The results were startling, especially when it came to violent crimes like carjackings.

Now, however, things appear to be reverting back, the mayor ordering a curfew to be put in place to try to get the situation under control.

Back on Track

Trump’s order was met with significant resistance among Democrats, so when it was set to expire, rather than renewing the order with Congress, Trump let it expire.

While there was some pushback from DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, she actually seemed to appreciate the help from Trump.

When the order expired, Bowser had stated that she would continue to work with federal authorities to try to fight these pockets of crime.

However, since the order had expired, the addition of the National Guard in the area was no longer in place.

Rise in Violence

Over the last few weeks, it has been business as usual in DC in terms of crime, and it only seems to be getting worse.

For instance, the week before Halloween, there were a dozen shootings that took place in the space of just a few hours.

This was a progression of violence in the city that had been gradually increasing since the federalization had ended.

Finally, this past weekend, Mayor Bowser took action.

Cracking Down

Bowser had to do something to address the violence, and she did this weekend. Bowser announced that a curfew is now in place in DC that will last through at least November 5.

Her order will allow police to declare “special zones.” In these areas, the police will be able to set curfews as early as 6:00 p.m. if they deem it to be necessary. And if you noticed, nobody has objected to her crackdown the way they did for Trump.

Bowser decided to enforce the curfew after violence erupted again on Halloween, when teenagers got out of control at the Navy Yard. According to reports, at least 10 people were arrested, including multiple minors. One police officer was reportedly injured during the incidents.

There was also violence in several other Democrat cities that got out of hand, most notably after the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series on Friday night, as their fans forgot how to act like adults. It was similar to what we saw take place in Philadelphia after the Eagles won the Super Bowl.
