Comer, McCarthy vow to hold FBI Director Wray in contempt

House Oversight Chairman Rep. Jim Comer (R-KY) has tirelessly worked to expose a reported FBI document that details a "criminal scheme" of sorts allegedly perpetrated by then-Vice President Joe Biden with an unnamed foreigner.

Comer has attempted to subpoena the document, even using the power of the subpoena, to no avail. According to The Hill, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is stepping in.

McCarthy said he would use his position to hold FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt if the subpoena wasn't met by the deadline of May 30.

The Republican speaker made the threat on Tuesday during a Fox News interview on Tuesday.

"So let me not just tell you. Let me tell Director Christopher Wray, right here, right now: If he misses the deadline today, I am prepared to move contempt charges in Congress against him," McCarthy said.

He added: "Comer subpoenaed the document that he has requested. We have jurisdiction over the FBI, which they seem to act like we do not. I personally called Director Wray and told him: He needs to send that document. Today is the deadline."

Not surprisingly, the deadline came and went, and the FBI still refused to hand over the document, though the agency admitted that the document exists, not specifying what it contains.

In the wake of the FBI's refusal to comply, Comer immediately moved to hold Wray in contempt.

"Today, the FBI informed @GOPoversight that it will not provide the unclassified documents subpoenaed by the Committee," the Republican chairman tweeted.

The Committee will now be taking steps to hold FBI Director Wray in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a lawful subpoena.

The White House, when questioned about the document, has written it off as a "political attack."

"The White House has characterized the matter as an 'unfounded political attack.' The two GOP lawmakers want to know if the FBI pursued the lead, and if so, the findings. Comer said he is prepared to initiate contempt proceedings. Statement from 5/24," Catherine Herridge tweeted.

Only time will tell if Comer and McCarthy can hold Wray accountable, but at the very least, it's going to be one heck of a fight between them and the White House.
