Closing arguments conclude in Trump's New York civil trial

Former President Donald Trump has officially finished at least one of the multiple trials he faces.

According to The Hill, closing arguments in his New York civil trial wrapped on Thursday.

The president sat in front row as he watched his legal team and state prosecutors make their final arguments in a case that could profoundly affect his New York-based business empire.

New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) "is asking for Trump to be barred from New York’s real estate business and force him to pay nearly $370 million in penalties for falsifying financial records," The Hill reported.

Judge Arthur Engoron, who has made headlines for bizarre behavior in the courtroom and constant sparring with Trump and his lawyers, said he'll make a decision in the case by Jan. 31.

He added that the date is not a "promise" or "guarantee."

Trump made headlines during the last day of the trial, according to the Associated Press.

AP noted:

In an extraordinary move for any defendant, Trump not only sought to make his own summation but then brushed past a question from the judge about whether he would follow rules requiring him to keep his remarks focused on matters related to the trial.

"I am an innocent man," Trump said. "I’m being persecuted by someone running for office, and I think you have to go outside the bounds."

For her part, AG James released a statement after the trial, insisting that the prosecution wasn't politically motivated, though many believe it was, including Trump.

"This case has never been about politics or personal vendetta or about name-calling," James said outside court. "This case is about the facts and the law. And Mr. Donald Trump violated the law."

Despite the number of legal issues Trump faces, he still maintains a commanding lead over his GOP primary opponents, and has also beat President Joe Biden in national polls.

Only time will tell what the judge rules in this case, which could seriously impact the Trump business empire.
