With all of the violent crime in Chicago, Donald Trump had threatened to federalize the city and deploy the Guard.
Both Mayor Johnson and Governor Pritzker pushed back on the idea of allowing the Guard to deploy.
Trump then canceled his plan, but now one Democrat in the city is hoping Trump will reconsider.
We all know how this works… Donald Trump says he wants to do something, and Democrats freak out and call him the bad orange man, which is what took place here.
After Trump said he was going to federalize the city to cut crime, Governor Pritzker responded, “We want to make sure and show off that there’s no emergency happening in Chicago.
“We’ve been fighting crime. We’ve been trying to prevent crime and it’s been working.”
That is simply not true, as Chicago has one of the worst murder rates in the country, and regularly leads the country in overall murders.
With so much resistance, Trump decided to avoid a PR nightmare and pulled the threat.
He stated, "I'll be the first to say it now, we're going to Memphis. I would have preferred going to Chicago."
I have never been a fan of federalizing the city, as I think the better approach is to make a very public stink of offering the help, and that, if refused, Democrats choose not to help law-abiding citizens.
I would hold a weekly press conference with crimes committed, murders, etc., saying that much of this could have been prevented had they allowed the federal government to help. I just think, as conservatives, we have to respect states’ rights, even when it makes us sick.
Raymond Lopez, the Democratic alderman for Chicago’s 15th Ward, would love to get Trump’s help, and he is one of the few Democrats in the city not afraid to come forward (he claims many feel this way, but are afraid to cross the party).
He stated, “This is a very real war that we are fighting here, and we need every tool box to win it. If that means working with a Republican president to keep Chicagoans safe, then that is what we should be doing. We shouldn’t be playing politics with people’s lives.”
Lopez continued, “We have human traffickers connected with Tren de Aragua here selling women for $150 on Facebook Marketplace. I had high school students gunned down by a Venezuelan migrant on their way home from school a couple of weeks ago. We now even have gang versus gang warfare that’s taken an international turn because of some of the migrants that are here.”
I think he is right on the cooperation point, and I 100% believe that many Democrats would love help in these violent cities, but they don’t want to be the ones to give in to Trump for fear it would help Republicans. Let that sink in just a bit… they would rather allow their constituents to suffer than appear to be working in a bipartisan way.
