This week, the Biden administration saw the departure of one of its leading health officials.
Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), announced her resignation, the Associated Press reported.
The announcement came shortly after the World Health Organization (WHO) downgraded the pandemic from its previous "global emergency" status, and in the wake of the Biden administration declaring an end to the pandemic emergency.
Walensky cited the diminishing pandemic as her main reason for stepping down, after enduring years of intense scrutiny and criticism regarding her management of the crisis.
The soon-to-be-former CDC director's last day on the job is set for June 30, according to her resignation letter.
President Joe Biden accepted Walensky's resignation and praised her for holding the post during a "once in a lifetime" pandemic situation.
"Dr. Walensky has saved lives with her steadfast and unwavering focus on the health of every American. As Director of the CDC, she led a complex organization on the frontlines of a once-in-a-generation pandemic with honesty and integrity," Biden said.
He added: "She marshalled our finest scientists and public health experts to turn the tide on the urgent crises we’ve faced."

"Dr. Walensky leaves CDC a stronger institution, better positioned to confront health threats and protect Americans. We have all benefited from her service and dedication to public health, and I wish her the best in her next chapter," Biden continued.
In her resignation letter, Walkensky wrote, "I have never been prouder of anything I have done in my professional career," but added that she has "mixed feelings" about leaving her job.
Social media reacted strongly to the announcement, with many cheering the news, as the right widely panned Walensky for many of her pandemic-related decisions at the CDC.
"Celebrate the resignation of Rochelle Walensky, who botched nearly everything while in charge of the CDC during the pandemic. Her tyrannical authoritarianism & outright lying was only outmatched in DC by Fauci himself," the Libertarian Party of Kenton County tweeted.
It's unclear at this point what Walensky will do next. The CDC directorship was her first role in running a government health agency.
