A man was arrested at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center (CVC) while attempting to carry a machete and several knives into the building.
Mel J. Horne, 44, was apprehended by United States Capitol Police during a routine security check. Breitbart reported that the arrest took place on Wednesday afternoon at the north entrance of the CVC. Officers at the scene noticed the weaponry as it passed through an x-ray machine.
U.S. Capitol Police identified the suspected individual as Mel J. Horne. Upon further inspection of his belongings, officers discovered a machete along with three additional knives concealed in his bag.
Horne's arrest comes at a time of heightened security in the Capitol as former President Jimmy Carter lies in state at the rotunda. Security protocols in the vicinity have been intensified to honor and protect attendees and dignitaries paying their respects to the former president.
After the x-ray machine detected suspicious items, police officers halted the conveyer to further investigate Horne's bag. Consequently, they discovered the weapons and promptly took action. This immediate response led to Horne's arrest on charges of carrying dangerous weapons.
The presence of such weaponry at the CVC raises concerns, especially during a period marked by public gatherings. Despite the attempts to breach security, authorities have maintained vigilance in protecting the Capitol precinct.
In a statement, Capitol Police expressed their commitment to campus safety. “During a security screening...our officers spotted a machete” in Mr. Horne's possession, which was subsequently secured by the responding officers. This swift action prevented any potential threats from materializing.
Additionally, Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger highlighted the importance of continuous attention to safety protocols, noting, “Our officers know they cannot let their guard down for one second." Such diligence enables security personnel to effectively maintain peace on Capitol grounds.
President-elect Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were among those present to honor President Carter. Their attendance underscores the significance of maintaining order and safety during ceremonial proceedings.
The Capitol Visitor Center serves as an entryway for thousands each day, including tourists, staff, and visiting dignitaries.
A potential security breach threatens not only the safety of these individuals but also undermines public trust in protective measures.
With numerous high-profile visitors, including former and current government leaders, the vigilance displayed by Capitol Police holds paramount importance for ensuring safety. Charges against Horne highlight the gravity of his actions and the legal repercussions of weapon possession under such circumstances.
Visitors and guests are reassured that the security infrastructure at the Capitol remains robust. Through consistent vigilance and efficient protocols, Capitol Police aim to preempt and address any potential threats effectively.
The incident involving Horne serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for strict security measures. As events of public interest converge within the nation's capital, the responsibility of maintaining safety rests heavily on the shoulders of Capitol Police.
