Biden may be losing the Black vote in South Carolina

President Joe Biden may be losing the Black vote in South Carolina that helped propel him to his 2020 victory, the BBC reported. This is especially concerning for his campaign as the state holds this year's first official Democratic primary on Saturday.

Biden was largely responsible for the change to make South Carolina first this time around. It has a population that is nearly 25% Black, and Biden said that designating the Palmetto State as first was part of an effort "to make sure the process reflected the diversity of our party."

Even though Biden will likely win the primary there, it's still the race to watch, according to University of South Carolina professor Todd Shaw. "Black voters in South Carolina mirror trends among black voters nationally. So, what happens here could be an indicator of what's to come."

Black voters may reverse course now and support former President Donald Trump on the 2024 ballot. Biden's campaign will have to decide how best to proceed as his support evaporates among this important voting bloc.

In 2020, 92% of Black voters supported him, while just 71% said the same for his 2024 reelection bid. The trend of Black voters abandoning Biden extends across six swing states.

Without their support, Biden would not have beaten then-President Donald Trump and could certainly struggle to win this time around. The Black vote also carried him in Georgia, where historic turnout by the demographic helped Biden become the first Democrat since 1992 to carry the state.

The problem with the Biden campaign is that voters of all stripes are looking at nearly four years of a Biden presidency, and people don't like what they see. In the struggling small town of Winnsboro, home to just 3,000 residents, Black voters are vocal about their change of heart.

"I'll never vote for Biden again," barbershop owner Clarence Pauling, 49, said. His is one of the few businesses that hasn't been shuttered for good in this struggling town.

"Yes Lord!" a man getting his hair cut in Pauling's shop shouted. "Giving all that money to Ukraine," the man added.

"You got people right here that need it. We got homeless people sleeping at the bus stop."

The barber's customer is not alone in believing that Biden isn't interested in helping ordinary people. Pauling said that he's consistently voted for Democrats, including Barack Obama, in both 2008 and 2012, but won't be doing so this year

He believes Biden "talks a good game but doesn't deliver" on his promises. "Trump tells the truth," Pauling said, citing the debate with Hillary Clinton when Trump admitted that he uses the "rigged system" to work in his favor.

"I can dig that. I'm tired of everybody trying to be politically correct. Tell it like it is," Pauling said.

Biden is losing support across every demographic because he's done a terrible job, but it's especially concerning when it comes to historically loyal Black voters. Something has to change for him if he has any chance of winning in 2024 against Trump.
