Biden admin. targets water heaters with new regulation

President Joe Biden, with a new regulation, is now targeting your water heater.

We have already seen the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), under Biden's leadership, target a wide range of household appliances - from gas stoves to laundry machines to dishwashers to refrigerators and more - all as part of the political left's climate change agenda.

Now, the target is water heaters.

The DOE announced its new, proposed regulation for water heaters in a press release that it published on Friday, July 21.

The press release states, "The proposal would require the most common-sized electric water heaters to achieve efficiency gains with heat pump technology and gas-fired instantaneous water heaters to achieve efficiency gains through condensing technology."

The proposed regulation, if finalized, would go into effect in 2029.

The DOE is claiming that this regulation, combined with all its other regulations targeting appliances, would "save Americans approximately $198 billion and reduce 501 million metric tons of harmful carbon dioxide emissions cumulatively over 30 years—roughly equivalent to the combined annual emissions of 63 million homes, or approximately 50 percent of homes in the United States."

Regarding water heaters, specifically, the press release claims:

Replacing common-sized traditional electric resistance storage water heaters with electric heat pump water heaters meeting the proposed levels would save consumers $1,868 on average over the life of the appliance, with savings even higher for renters and low-income households who spend a higher percentage of their income on utility bills.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm echoed these points in a statement that she released on Friday.

"Today’s actions—together with our industry partners and stakeholders—improve outdated efficiency standards for common household appliances, which is essential to slashing utility bills for American families and cutting harmful carbon emissions," Granholm said.

She added, "This proposal reinforces the trajectory of consumer savings that forms the key pillar of Bidenomics and builds on the unprecedented actions already taken by this Administration to lower energy costs for working families across the nation."

The big question is whether these regulations will do as much good for America and the American people as Granholm and the Biden administration claim that they will.

No one knows the answer to this question with certainty. But, there are many experts who are skeptical.

U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), in response to the regulation, put out a statement, saying:

Leave us alone. These products already exist in the free market. Consumers should decide whether the upfront cost of a heat-pump water heater is worth the possible long term savings. In many cases, the monthly savings never make up for the upfront cost of the equipment.
